The Guardian's weekly round-up of You Tube sport videos includes
Chess player Hikaru Nakamura doesn’t like what he sees on the next table at the Gibraltar Open.
Looks more like he thinks Aronian has made an unpleasant smell!

The quote above says 7 rounds, the website however says only 6, being Thursday evening, two rounds Friday and Saturday and one Sunday.
Which is correct?

Re: Incremental controls - the `unlimited` game.

The Leagues in which I play allow the home team to decide whether or not increments will be used. As far as I know, no potential visiting player has refused to visit a club which uses increments. Of course 30 seconds is ideal if possible, but as Roger says, 10 or 15 seconds is adequate. In most case...

Re: Media comments on chess

On an edition of Eggheads this week, one of the Sport questions had 'Chess' as one of the three possible answers. Although it wasn't the correct answer to the question, I thought it noteworthy that the quiz compilers considered Chess a sport.

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss 2019 (Candidates qualifier)

What is vital is that there must be a properly devised playoff system, with at least a full day set aside for it. Two would be better. Looks like there won't be. The regulations state- If the top two (2) or more players score the same points, the tie is to be decided by the following criteria, in o...

We'd give that a go here in Bolton, but the stadium might get repossessed before the end of the tournament
Things were never that bad in Horwich when Horwich RMI played there (not even the football!) :)

You don't need to be able to swim - you just need to be able to sink!

Why not? They're hardly likely to be competing for the same players.

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

What happens far more often is that a game gets delayed by ten minutes ( time for thirty more moves ) because of a dispute, or because the analogue clock has been running slow and the players didn't notice. Or even more often, the home team hasn't exercised its prerogative to start the clocks on ti...

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

Have you considered teaching the grading system how to read pgn files? It would only have to read the header and those submitting results would only have to create dummy games. The point is that software that can create pgn files is in wide use, so no need to reinvent wheels of file formats. But wo...

EDIT: very nice.
Indeed. I got as far as the crucial promotion, at which point I thought that surely a Knight promotion is the only way to win, with a Bishop only drawing. But in fact the reverse is true.

There was a study in CHESS magazine some time ago which featured 3 or 4 promotions to a bishop. But don't ask me which issue!
