Membership Doppelgangers

An article has recently appeared on the ECF website exhorting people not to create a new membership record when renewing their membership. I fear this is unlikely to help much. The problem is that the Azolve site makes it too easy for this to happen. It should query if no value is entered in the Gra...

Re: Hastings Congress

Do we have any alcohol tolerance in Chess? Need to be. Being 'drunk' is a subjective description. It is the behaviour of the player which is the issue, and this is already covered in the laws. As alcohol has a negative effect on performance, I am usually quite happy if my opponent is drinking (thou...

Re: Does being a team captain affect your grade?

I play for my club in three different leagues, but am captain for just one of these teams, so I have checked my grading performance in each league for the last 5 years, and found only a 2% improvement in those games where I was not captain. This is based on a total of between 25 & 30 games per year ...

In other news, Usain Bolt has retired because he realises that he cannot compete with Lewis Hamilton.
Yes, just one of the "...other fields where machines perform better...".

'Go' master quits

A strange reason for quitting, and I am not just thinking of the comparison with chess. There are many other fields where machines perform better than humans.

Re: Media comments on chess

From "In fact" in "Prospect" p8 "A chess player can burn up to 6,000 calories a day playing in a tournament, three times what an average person consumes in a day" - source given as ESPN 13th September, 2019. Interesting. Our club has recently been ousted from our playing room and relegated to a bac...

Re: Would You Pay Extra to Win Prize Money?

I can't really answer the question, because I would be reluctant to enter such an event, whether I felt I had a chance of a prize or not.

It seems daft to me to have a British Championship for a restricted group of players where the eligibility criterion is that their standard of play is below some level.
The same argument can be applied to county championships.

Sorry, Should we be more lenient to young players?
Like declaring them lost on the 3rd illegal move?
No. They have enough advantages already!

I suppose we have all encountered the kind of utterly limp "handshake" that seems to be popular with young players in particular?
'Popular' may not be the correct description - I think it's simply that no-one has educated them in the correct etiquette.

OK, you wouldn't play on with (W) Pf4, Be5 against Pf5,Bf4, kings anywhere...
Certainly not. You would instead examine the scoresheets to determine how you came to have 2 pieces on the same square!

Re: Change to Fines for Non-Members ?

I believe the £16 is not a fixed fee, but is the Bronze membership fee for the year in which the games were played. However this does not confer Bronze membership on the individual(s) affected - as Roger says, the fee applies to each league or organisation in which games were played rather than to t...
