Re: You Tube Chess Instruction

I do have some sympathy for what Paul and Austin have requested. The problem is that You Tube imposes a 15 minute limit on the videos, which means that I am limited as to the type of game to choose. Throughout the event I've found myself rushing to complete a 30 move game, let alone a marathon of 1...

Re: You Tube Chess Instruction

Hello Andrew, Many thanks for your analysis in the commentary room and the games of the day, which have been very instructive on the whole. However, did you consider the marathon game between J Hawkins v D Howell last night? Wouldn't that game be instructive for not giving up/chess stamina/convertin...

Re: How interested are you in seeing your grading details?

Hi Adam, Thanks for your reply. I am certainly not in the anti-ECF camp whatsoever. In fact, I'm greatly encouraged by the general direction and productivity of the ECF - yourself, Andrew Farthing and CJ are such examples of the refreshing approach. I was being quite flippant with Alex (in my most r...

Re: How interested are you in seeing your grading details?

I suppose I'm asking why do we need to fund the national organisation? Why should I be bothered about the ECFs activities? Do you want: a) England to send teams to the Olympiad and other international competitions b) English juniors to play abroad in international competitions c) England to send de...

Re: How interested are you in seeing your grading details?

I personally think the Yorkshire "bashing" is quite harsh. Remember its very possible for any existing chess association to sever its ties with the ECF and setup without any need to worry about the ECF. Most players down my neck of the wood play around 15-20 games per year within the confines of the...

Re: Making a zero default time in all leagues!

This thread is a waste of time, hence me taking the time to post a reply!! :-) The originating post in this thread is indicitive of "please engage your brain before you open your mouth"! As its been mentioned chess is a hobby combining fun and enjoyment for practically all of us. Losing a game to a ...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010

Stewart Rueben: "To secure say £5000 for start money for this year's British would have required a substantial percentage increase in game fee. Well, worth it, in my opinion. But Council, who invariably minimise game fee, would have voted it down." Increasing game fee would affect us mere woodpush...

Re: Violence In The Game

There's a particular vile individual who plays in the Northern congresses. He recently won a prize at the Scarborough congress (I'm not saying what section and how many points he was on) but suffice to say I had the displeasure of playing him around 12 years ago at the Middlesbrough Congress - Major...

Re: Does the ECF cater adequately for professional players?

The original question raised some intersting replies. Some observations from a Club player; If someone becomes so good at the game he/she considers a living can be made at it surely before a decision to effectively become self employed is taken all the possibilties are looked at. I dont think a nat...

Re: Gerry Walsh Will Not Seek Re-Election as ECF President

Loving the two faced new look Ernie. Ill remember Gerry for making alister Hung cry at ampleforth 2, thatll be it really, its how most of my side remember him. Whilst he did do good in his time, this was a belated resignation. Ben I think Ernie's position has always been quite clear. Ernie has resp...

Re: Lessons to be learnt- if only?

Today I read an interesting article in the Daily Mail concerning the state of the sport Snooker. No major sponsors for the Masters currebtly being played, No sponsor for the 2009 World Championship in Sheffield. Question marks over the remaining couple of sponsors. Prize money for the current tourn...

Hello

Hi All, Just a quick hello from a new member. I'm an average club player (gr 132) who has played in the Cleveland area for around 15 years. Never reached the summit but enjoyed the time and made some really good friends along the way. Been an avid guest reader of this forum but decided to join and m...
