Re: Candidates Matches 3rd - 27th May 2011
I don't like the idea that you have months to prepare for the first match and then 2-3 days for the semi and final. Why should the players do that? In fact, they have months to prepare against any of the other candidates. Nobody forbids Topalov to prepare against Kramnik today... and if the match d...

time control followed by quickplay finish: what's the point?
While reading the post about the chess leagues surveys, I was surprised to see how popular is to have a time control of the form: - 1h 15m for the first 30 moves - 15m quickplay finish for the rest of the game ...with small variations for the number of games (30 to 36), for the initial amount time (...

Re: Etiquette of resigning
Depends how long the player is away for I would have thought Alan ~ that's why I added the caveat "if the player really is nowhere to be seen." I don't think it's reasonable to ask a player to wait indefinitely. Indefinitely? There is a clock for the exact purpose of having games of limited duratio...

Re: Etiquette of resigning
In the last round of a recent congress, black was in a commanding postion with over 20 minutes on the clock, whereas white had about 7 minutes remaining. It was white's move, but instead of doing so the player just stood up and without offering to shake hands just said ''It is too early to resign b...

Re: Chessbase is not putting its mouth where its money is
If Chessbase were platform independent, I would try paying for an account with them. One (distant) day, you might have to open your wallet, if they ever make this to work http://www.chesslive.de/playchess/ Still does not really work even on windows, might work on MacOS same as on windows; I would n...

What do you think of the new New In Chess format?
Just wondered what other readers think of the new format of the New In Chess magazine.
It might be just "opposition to change", but I feel I was more comfortable with the old format.

Re: Chessbase is not putting its mouth where its money is
Why doesn't ChessBase support Linux? Because it's uneconomic for them to do so. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3189 Right on the money, the only morality is, does it make money? Also its antithesis, if it don't make money it is immoral. No need to enter a debate about morality. For ...

Re: TWIC down?
I understand TWIC & the shop have had their plug pulled by their ISP. I believe the ISP holds them responsible for hacking attacks. No idea whether their site has been compromised; or even if the ISP has its facts right. Causing considerable frustration, I'm told If that is true... it would be nice...

Re: Karpov candidate for FIDE president
It might be determined exclusively by the Russian chess federation though I'm not sure it has much to do with the Russian chess federation. Perhaps the best hope is that the Kremlin decides that Ilyumzhinov is too much of a liability. For instance if he takes a line too independent of Moscow. Not s...

Is there going to be a London Chess Classics 2010?
Last year the tournament was announced very late, it would be nice for amatours to know the details a bit more in advance, particularly the playing schedule.

Look at scid
http://scid.sourceforge.net/download.html
It has been ported to the mac platform and provides combined functions of chess database and game play/analysis (engines of reasonable strength included in the package).

Re: The grading of adjourned/adjudicted games
Analyzing adjourned games with external help (friends, books and so on) has been a common practice at any level (every world championship match had players with teams helping them with analysis of adjourned games). In fact, it is highly educational to analyze your own adjounred game with a player st...
