Re: Chess is not a sport but a game. So what’s the difference?

Indutibaly, but I rather suspect that the vast majority of the English speaking world shares the writer's opinion. The rest are contorting themselves into changing the meaning of a word because its use in one or two documents hinders their objective of raising money. The question whether “chess is ...

Re: FIDE Ratings - Part Results

I'm sure FIDE could tinker with the rules as to what happens when initial performances are below the 1000 minimum threshold, so that improving players who entered their first tournament too early don't get ratings well below their strength or be given incentives to lose or withdraw. The obvious sol...

Re: FIDE Ratings - Part Results

Surely - at least for children - it would be better not to have this system. As it is, the logic would suggest that we should not take promising children to such tournaments until they are overwhelmingly certain to get a rating. This is true only if you care more about rating than about playing che...

Re: Post Brexit Openings

I expect a surge in populism, sorry popularity of the "go whistle" opening sequence requiring White to start the game with 1. f3 (thus damaging their own position) then leaving the chessboard, going whistling for a while, hoping for something suddenly to happen in their favor but achieving nothing e...

Re: Candidates Tournament in Berlin March 2018

In good form, Karjakin is very well suited for this kind of event. He’s definitely my favourite, remaining undefeated and scoring points against out of form opponents. Unless an early loss in the first rounds forces him out of his comfort zone.

Re: Tournament Pgn Files

Why is it that so many tournament pgn files are full of garbage? I enclose an example (one of many) of the junk that pads out the pgn files of many respectable tournaments. [Event "Hastings Masters"] [Site "Horntye, Hastings"] [Date "2018.01.02"] [Round "6.2"] [White "Gormally, Daniel W"] [Black "F...

FIDE payment site: Player license over-the-board 1yr 60.00 EUR

Hello, a separate thread has a message with a link to the FIDE payment web page: https://payment.fide.com/payment.phtml In the list of fees for payment, the first option is a "Player license over-the-board 1yr 60.00 EUR". No mention of this in the explanatory link on the payment site http://www.fide...

Appeals Committees can decide on all sorts of disputes (e.g. matters of fact) not just on whether an Arbiter's decision is correct or not.
Could you make an example of an appeal where no arbiter would not have been consulted earlier?

Re: Penalty for illegal move: 2018 FIDE revision

Additionally, from a sporting point of view, Mr Pein felt mistakes by arbiters should be part of the game as they are in other sports and should not be corrected at the end of the game. I think Malcolm is wrong here - or, at least, trying to implement a fundamental change in the game. It is current...

Re: New broadcast model for World Championship Match

I’ve seen two reports on twitter from established journalists - Peter Doggers & Leonard Ootes - asking why Agon are charging money to watch the video feed of the Grand Prix via their website whilst giving the same video away for free via Facebook. I guess they are the kind of people that keep askin...

Re: 2017 Champions Showdown in St Louis

This does not represent the future at all, if anything it represents the past. My point is that is this is what the big money wishes to sponsor nowadays, it may be the future too. I would not read too much into a one-off event. Especially from the Saint Louis chess club where sometimes they seem to...

Re: 2107 Champions Showdown in St Louis

The players are getting paid very well for this circus, but does it really have to represent the future of top level chess? This does not represent the future at all, if anything it represents the past: in the last century, before the widespread introduction of the DGT clocks, everyone played blitz...

Re: Favourite Rating Upsets Ever: Wins or Draws.

Karpov's loss to an obscure untitled German in a 1983 (all play all) tournament has to be up there. Think it has been mentioned on here (and the game posted) before....... This one maybe: [Event "FRG-ch International"] [Site "Hannover FRG"] [Date "1983.08"] [EventDate "?"] [Round "1"] [Result "0-1"...

Re: PGN and POS

Everything should be back to normal with posting games and positions. As a reminder, in order to post a game you should use the pgn tag with the full game score. For example: [pgn] [Event "London league"] [Site "London ENG"] [Date "2017.10.23"] [Round "?"] [White "Casaschi, Paolo"] [Black "My oppone...
