Patricia Anne Sunnucks was a retired Army Major who served in Hong Kong with, amongst others, Portsmouth's Terry Hollington. She or...

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

Badmaster was in 'Newsflash. This was occasion when Hartston revealed 'Do you realise that he is rotating ant-clockwise?' I wish we could have days like this now and I know Leonard will agree.

There are 2 photos, Cavendish and Walker (maybe?) over to the right in the non-Pinto pic.

Re: Junior squad/Kasparov simul in 1986

Karpov giving the simul. This was at Westergate. At the left in the Pinto picture, with white beard and glasses, my father who sat next to Tom Sweby, a Luton columnist as I was, for Basingstoke, at the time. I think GH Diggle was also in evidence. Peter Wells being local (ish) was interviewed at the...

No Idea

Tonight, as ever was, I saw on the News that Philip Pullman (b.1946), best selling author, is to be knighted in the New Year's Honours List. His interview saw him browsing through his library in which I spotted MCO 11 . Is it it generally known that he is a player? I've no idea. http://essexroad.blo...

Re: Milunka Lazarevic

The report is on p.179 of the June 1969 'Chess Life & Review' and is indeed by Trifunovich. Dinah is called Diane and her tutoring from Bob Wade is mentioned together with comment from the Yugoslav GM as to Dinah's appearance as Leonard indicates. I may be wrong but the press may have been looking f...

Re: John Rety (1930-2010)

I met him at an anarchists' Christmas party. We chatted and he sent me a short story. Two bands turned up to play at a party: both insisted they stayed and played. They did, opposite ends of the room, seemingly in competition. Priceless. He told me it was a nightmare translating Flesch's Batsford, b...
