Re: Hope for our society!

I agree the Alekhine question was poorly worded, but I still think it was easy. It's obvious what the question was getting at, and I'm not even an expert on Alekhine.

Re: The English Language

I don't think I would ever use the term pervasive prevention.

I'm guessing the meaning is similar to Nimzowitsch's prophylaxis - stopping your opponents doing what they want to do.

Re: Hope for our society!

There shouldn't be any element of 'trick' to a question. It causes ill will.

Re: Disturbing king and queen position

Thanks for posting those nostalgic photos John. I was present at the centenary Varsity match (got a decent draw against Watson); your photo reminded me of John Cox's amazing barnet at that time.

Happy days.

Re: Hope for our society!

Both were accepted. Now asking the capitals of Australia or Brazil might have point; easy, certainly, but with ways to go astray.

Melbourne?
Sydney??
Sao Paolo???
Rio????

Re: Hope for our society!

I think it was an easy question but not a good one. Any talk of spectacular moves leaves room for ambiguity. A good quiz question should be unambiguous, not too hard and not too easy. I recently took part in a quiz where one of the questions asked what is the capital of China. Laughably easy, so in ...

Re: Hope for our society!

We may be talking semantics here re Alekhine, but I would describe ...Ne4 as brilliant, and ...Re3 as spectacular. It's the difference between putting a piece en prise and leaving it there. I think it's pretty obvious what the quizmasters were getting at. In fact the question was easy: anyone with a...

Re: Disturbing king and queen position

I asked the same question about Teichmann on another thread - we were talking about 1. b4.

He IS still around, though not in a chess sense I think.

Florin Gheorghiu? I seem to recall he beat Fischer, although characteristically Bobby turned a draw down.

Re: A Former Loophole-The “Legal” Triple Check

Silly question if I may.

I take it that if I deliver double check and the opposing king can't move, that ends the game in all cases? There can never be a defence by capture?

I seem to recall Nimzowitsch writing that when faced with double check, even the most timid king must scuttle...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

This forum is at its worst when politics are under discussion.

The clue is in the title of the thread. Only: CHESS should not have been put in brackets!

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

I don't think Bobby was as good as 2600 in 1992. Look at game 5. He was about Spassky's strength, with Boris in it for the money and throwing a bone or two.

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

An interesting reading of Kasparov's comment.

Would Boris have thrown a game so early in the match? I've always taken Kasparov to have meant something different: that Boris just wasn't very good in 1992!

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

John, I offer you game 1. A masterly demonstration of 'a' file domination, worthy of Karpov. Not bad after 20 years off.
