Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Finally we have a game. Magnus could be in serious trouble.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Perhaps it's time to reflect on the impact computers are having on the game. It appears that Black is doing well out of the engine situation. White retains an inbuilt advantage; arguably it's one of the great weaknesses of our game, this inbuilt advantage (unlike snooker for example, where you'd bet...

Re: Anyone else missing the C/Anand and C/Karjakin matches?

I will always watch with keenness. At present I'm watching a real game of chess. I imagine Magnus will hold on, but who knows?

Re: Anyone else missing the C/Anand and C/Karjakin matches?

I'm missing the Karpov v Korchnoi matches which I used to follow on Ceefax. These shorter matches are a yawnfest. A higher standard of play? Almost certainly, but no one seems prepared to take a risk. Chess is a draw. This becomes clearer as the players get stronger. Players such as Aronian and So a...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

Draw. Magnus making no impression so far, and his lack of a 'strong serve' with White is all too apparent.

Re: Division Two 2018-19

What did people think of the venue? Turned out that four of the Div 2 games were played in two separate, small rooms. I don't like this - atmosphere is lacking in such an arrangement. On the plus side, you're forced to concentrate on your game. And the silence was pristine. I was shocked at the nois...

Leonard: Yes, that's the one. Szabo was there. I wouldn't describe your display as in any way secondary. After all, Szabo would not have sprung the Vienna trap on me!

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 20 to 28 October 2018

I fell for that Vienna trap against none other than L Barden. Simul, London 1974. Bet he's forgotten though...

Re: Sinquefield Cup

To me, Magnus only has the air of 'primus inter pares' at the moment. A bit like Botvinnik in the 1950s.

Re: Sinquefield Cup

Great to see a Tarrasch at this level. It will have its time again. I can safely say that Naka's h3 is not critical; I wish people would play that against me!

Re: British Championship 2018

Can Gawain really grind out a win from this? I don't think so.

Re: British Championship 2018

Win for Luke. His play got stronger as the tournament progressed, a common phenomenon with people who don't play much. Lovely attack with equal material, showing the value of coordinated pieces. That's my prediction gone then.

Re: British Championship 2018

Draw for Adams when he must have been expecting more. Good news for him is that Howell appears to have no chance of winning. Indeed, his position is going from bad to worse.

Re: British Championship 2018

Update: looks as though Adams might be messing it up. Another sign that his form has not been scintillating, albeit good enough.

Re: British Championship 2018

It's looking like Adams is taking control. In the meantime, Howell has demonstrated nothing with White. So it looks like Mickey again. He had a huge slice of luck against Fodor (who seems to be crushing a perhaps tired Hebden), but no one else has shown much. Hence a deserving winner, if so it turns...
