Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

John, I offer you game 1. A masterly demonstration of 'a' file domination, worthy of Karpov. Not bad after 20 years off.

Re: Some thoughts on anti-cheating systems

Let me attempt to summarise in four simple words:

ONLINE CHESS IS SKITTLES.

Excuse the upper case.

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

Now I can be more precise.

Game 5. Fischer on the White side of a Breyer. He plays 21. Rc1 and then 22. Rb1. I haven't analysed this with a computer or anything, but those moves have an aimless quality which was hardly ever present when he was in his pomp.

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

I think Soviet thinking was that Bobby struggled in messy positions where he absolutely had to find the right move. I'm thinking of the Qf4!! he missed against Geller. The Spanish middlegame (sorry I can't be more precise, all of this is from memory) was just a normal position. Bobby just collapsed ...

Re: Rough estimates over Fischer's re-entry into chess.

There was a moment in the second match when I realised all was up. It had started so well. Bobby was in scintillating form in the first game, albeit against poor defence. Then, quite early in the match, Bobby found himself in a typical Spanish middlegame. And he didn't know what to do! A planless Bo...

Re: Pawn Sacrifice - the film

Actually. I've always thought game 6 is over-rated. Spassky's play was just too weak - a feature of the first half of the match generally. For me, the jewel in the crown is game 13. Even though Boris lost a pawn for almost nothing. I remember, at 10 years old, marvelling at Bobby's ...Rh8. Surely a ...

Re: Pawn Sacrifice - the film

I think Boris felt confident enough in his QGD not to do any preparation.Bobby didn't produce anything new; it was only new 'for him'. Indeed, I think Geller had even told Boris the right way to play... But he had become lazy, and forgot Geller's advice. Bobby was not only the stronger player, but t...

One thing that actors never do is move the pieces as real players do.

Check out the Thomas Crown Affair.

Re: Pawn Sacrifice - the film

Far be it for me to dissent from the general opinion that, from a player's point of view, the film is trash. Factual inaccuracies are legion. Who the hell was Ivanovich, allegedly world number 4? On a brighter note, the moves were correct. Bxh2 in game 1. Nh5 in game 3. If I were to play devil's adv...

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

You can't make a living just from playing. Not unless you are good - and I mean very good. But the Karpovs and the Fischers of this world are rare. There may be a living to be made out of coaching and writing. If you make your living out of coaching, you can give up on the idea of excelling as a pla...

Seems to indicate to me that cheating is rife in online chess, which is why I will always stick to OTB.

Re: Polish Opening 1. b4

Then Boris moved on to the Tarrasch in the second match, with better results. I've played the Tarrasch at least 20 times in 4NCL. I can safely say that nearly all of my opponents have given it a sterner test than Petrosian did. Just shows how much opening theory has moved on, and how you can't just ...

Re: Polish Opening 1. b4

To while away the boredom of lockdown, I've been playing through some old world championship games. I don't recommend the countless Botvinnik v Smyslov games: not much entertainment to be had there. Anyway, in the first Spassky v Petrosian match I was amazed to see Boris punt 1....b5 in a couple of ...

Re: Polish Opening 1. b4

Going a bit off-topic now, but re Teichmann, the other thing I remember from Edinburgh 1985 is him listening to Pali motivational tapes DURING PLAY.

Wonder how many regulations that would fall foul of now??
