Re: British Championship Congress 2020

I'm quite happy to return to Torquay and have booked my accommodation. Looking at the schedule everything is largely in the same place as last year with the exception of the junior events which have moved into a second week, with an extra run of adult events running alongside. For me it doesn't actu...

Re: Handshakes

Answering the original question; I think that if during the game your opponent's behaviour had been sufficiently obnoxious and/ or unsportsmanlike to cause offence then you would be within your rights to refuse to shake hands. However I don't think its something that should be done lightly. I've nev...

Re: Membership

I have just renewed my Gold membership. Last year it was £34. This year it is £39. an increase of 15%. I don't know what activities you are involving yourself in other than maintaining a grading database, but I would suggest you need to cut down. Presumably you are aware that this is the English Ch...

Re: Brian Gillman

Assuming Roger is correct, which I'm sure he is, there's a game and photo in a report of Paul Keres's 1962 simul tour here . An interesting article with a remarkable amount of familiar names. Most will be familiar to all readers but one stood out for me; J Sepping who played in the York simul and w...

The ECF office is in process of issuing said invoices and should finish the bulk of them this week, d.v.
Thanks Paul. I have emailed Andrew Walker as well. I'm mainly trying to ensure that the local ones come to me to prevent them going into a black hole elsewhere.

Re: Change to Fines for Non-Members ?

but I'm wondering if the ECF is in the process of issuing invoices for leagues or if these have already been sent. That's why the issue has surfaced. I know that Roger. My point is that I'm expecting a couple of invoices to come to me so either they haven't been issued yet or they've gone to the wr...

Re: Change to Fines for Non-Members ?

The new system is much better as it does away with the `tax` element of the old system in that you're no longer incurring a £2.50 charge every time a non member plays; allowing you to give a new player a go or use a one off reserve for free. This isn't really one for a public forum but I'm wondering...

Re: Good/Bad things from the British 2019

Bad was the Issue that we are not allowed to talk about but maybe the ECF need to look at this and maybe think that something along the line of if a player does get DQ then the match point is award, but the graded game should not!! I may be wrong but is it not the case that this regulation (game co...

In which case parents and spectators need to be kept in a designated areas as much as possible or prevented from using electronic devices outside of that area (at Torquay spectators were warned about the use of phones). At Torquay I felt provisions for this were excellent; there were separate toile...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

I agree that a line should be drawn on this matter There is the question as to what a player should do if an opponent appears to be behaving suspiciously. GMs and IMs, you might assume, despite some evidence to the contrary, act with integrity. Where younger players make frequent absences from the ...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

I don't know about the main room but in the other room Geoff Gammon has repeated the same notices daily including the rules about mobile phones. I assume that is so there can be absolutely no misunderstanding.

Re: Needing to be ECF member to play in British Championships?

But is there something wrong with chess promotion when the ECF can take its annual tournament to a town without a chess club and without plans to use the national event to promote local interest? By my count there will be three other Congresses in Torquay this calendar year, assuming the October/No...

Re: Governance issues

Tomorrow's ECF Board of Directors meeting will have the first opportunity since the Finance Council in April to properly discuss the still unresolved governance concerns I and others have raised about the sudden resignation of Traci Whitfield as Junior Director last year and the subsequent appointm...
