Re: Media comments on chess

It's tough in the Surrey league. I've worn my shin pads after footie training for certain games. I recall some years (20+) ago via football media of a Norway international player also being a GM at chess. So that will give Magnus something else to think about. Anyway watching England play football 8...

Re: ECF Player of the Year Award

Feels improper to me too.
X factor voting is a bit more secretive.

Re: NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I'm not to sure why there is any concern of motives of officers & volunteers, & those that support ECF & chess organisation.

I really appreciate all that you contribute, ANGUS, JACK, DAVID & others as well as what you will continue in the future.

Re: We're goin' to Vegas!!!

It will probably happen but not that many runners. There was a recent attempt to fill Wembley for a poker tournament - got nowhere near the numbers but still ran. Go to WSOP in Vegas & sure you can get high stakes (or low) chess games. A lot of ex-chess players play poker now. Many play both. I have...

Re: ECF Council Meeting 12 April 2014

Players appreciate arbiters (& organisers) & have sympathy with fees, taxes, licences which just make the game more expensive for everyone. FIDE seem to expect that arbiters are more than volunteers. At the top they must be professional. The best arbiting I have seen - circa 1986 - Leicester Square,...

Moving before the opponent has pressed their clock button

Ought to have a bigger space between boards & clocks (1m) to avoid other players pressing the wrong clock. Pressing of the clock by other player may prevent claim of win on time. We need a crash course in setting up digital clocks. But have to ask the arbiter to make the ruling & change. In time tro...

Re: Compulsory Membership?

Why should the ECF (or MO) invoice a club? If ECF is implementing a compulsory scheme then they ought to sort out their £2 charges for services to individuals. And even though ECF have sent out details to current members there has been nothing positive to encourage, or allow clubs to encourage new ...

Re: 2 teams from the same club in the same league!

Playing board 1 against your first team board 1 can be a great experience for the weaker player. As for Drunken Knights 3 I was at the match v Wimbledon. But with likelihood of 3 teams next year in Division 1 Drunken Knights can only play each other once but could conceivably play the same opponent ...

Re: Time taken for follow up win

I won the Ilford Major in 2005. Not that you can see it on their congress website but clearly in my grading. Nice to be able to offer a draw in last round a pawn up and have a few hours break. Never won any other congress but close a few times. I have never won Kingston or Battersea's club champions...

Re: ECF accounts

This is my first ever post on the Forum. I really appreciate the work and enthusiasm of all the volunteers involved in organising English Chess. The accounts are important and need to be true and fair. And the real concern should be the Going Concern of the ECF. This country is in a significant econ...
