Re: Chess club folds

Hampton were playing in TV league in 2001/2002 - but nor after that - looking at TVL Secretarial. Though many of them continued with playing bridge - dr R. Harris was also a Kingston member so we as a club were very aware & local teams for their players to join happened. Teams what have withdrawn fr...

Re: AGM

John - thank you for live coverage - better than minutes.

Gave some of us a chance to play County Chess - a lovely trop to Horsham where there was torrential rain until the train got to Horsham then glorious sunshine!

Re: Adjudication: an appeal to holders of congress votes at

TV can have 2.5 hour sessions. The lateness of starting, some awful journeys, some where trains & buses not running after matches finish. Surrey too like that. Not sure why juniors ought to be playing that late on a school night. Note sure why ECF want to implement all anyway (& charges look like a ...

Re: Adjudication: an appeal to holders of congress votes at

On Stewart's point he has put this one before. In 2006 there were views from Thames Valley to oppose. Not sure why seem to suggest a 2014 rule change (from an inquorate meeting). Thames Valley very few finishes in this way. But mainly because at time control or shortly after - agree a half or resign...

Re: Zero tolerance

Zero tolerance in local leagues or congresses - travel problems - I think that may put off playing again.

Players stuck in traffic/snow etc.

Derek Coope went to Oban playing somewhere in the East. One of their players from Mull took a week to get home.

Re: Chess club folds

A few Hampton players came to Kingston, some elsewhere. One teacher at Hampton School. Thames Valley League. Nice pub etc. Nice players. Local too. Clapham Common - or at least some gentlemen playing chess in all weathers were there in late 70s/early 80s. Battersea & Streatham near. Point is getting...

Was trying to qualify for this one. On Poker Stars that is.

Anyway that half will give Simon a chance to play a bit more poker.

Re: Novice friendly chess clubs

As an ex-Battersea member I can say that Battersea has always been welcome to the novice player. I stumbled on a card in the local library in 1984. There were lots of local libraries in those days. It was a main way of communication for chess clubs & other societies. I got a very warm welcome and ho...

Re: ECF to refuse to grade Games?

I prefer adjournments to quickplay & not adjudication. Though will depend mainly on how bad work or travel has been. The worst adjournment I played on in was when an opponent sealed his move & I then suggested opening the envelope as I expect your move is I resign. It is mate in 3. He insisted on co...

Re: Child Genius

Many chats with strong juniors & their parents this year. Also with those that were former junior prodigies. I just hope the programme is better than Nigel Short's Blue Peter Badge. The parents of juniors may or may not remember that. Unlikely to be anything better on TV at 9 on Sunday so thanks for...

Re: Union Reps Skype Meeting 17/July

I do not believe there are an abundance of players in SCCU wanting to play county chess above the teams currently playing. There are other family & other interests, as well as w/e chess tournaments & junior events too. A big tournament in London at semi-final stages & and a England World Cup match. ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Today's Evening Standard - World Cup poker game - Holland v Argentina. Both bosses hold aces so poker game is tough to call. On reading the article it certainly sounds like CHESS rather than poker. "No other managers have tried so many formations, no other teams have displayed such tactical variatio...

Re: Possession of (or by) Mobile Phones

Not really an option in closing evening chess - particularly as ECF charge our members for our rating purposes.

Re: Possession of (or by) Mobile Phones

I wish those working on sorting out ECF rules, tournament rules, County Rules & our club competition rules well. Also for those playing in tournaments in July. On 4 NCL issue is all these in use in premises for those waiting. I'm sure the luggage issue is resolvable. Just trying to work out what we ...
