Re: Accidentally displacing a piece

In a very sharp position, he planned to move one of them across the board, but picked up the other, and instantly resigned. Was he really caught by touch move, as he clearly believed? My guess is yes - his movement in reaching out to touch that particular piece was deliberate; his mind was playing ...

Re: Accidentally displacing a piece

It has to assumed that the Arbiter was neutral and in observing the incident he has interpreted the Laws of Chess in accordance with his training. Please, accept the decision and learn from it. So Mr. Flatt, you are saying that an arbiter MUST be right only because he has followed a training course...

Re: Accidentally displacing a piece

I should qualify my earlier comment by saying that if Giulio touched the Bishop first, then it was touch move on the Bishop. The way I read his sequence of events, it implied that he corrected his King position first by touching his King, before touching the Bishop. Yes, Alex, I lifted my arm in or...

Re: Accidentally displacing a piece

Ha-ha David Robertson, I completely agree!! Fortunately the majority of the ECF readers doesn't know these words, I guess ... maybe only the last one you wrote, that is very similar to French :-)

Accidentally displacing a piece

Last week I took part in the Italian Championship Semifinals on the Adriatic Sea, and I played really well. My lowest-rated opponent was 2080: nevertheless, I won 3 games, drew 2 and lost 4, and, hadn't I met a very unpleasant and unsporting person, I would have won another game. In the second round...

Playing Keith Richardson

Hello, it has been some months since I last wrote on the English Chess Forum. I have some good news, an interesting game against an English player to share, and an unpleasant episode to report. Let's start with the good news. During the last year I studied a lot, and I definitely improved my playing...

Re: Is this fair?

Abolish grading prizes and put the difference into the prizes for being the best player(s) ;) This is not completely wrong in my opinion. There are players that play mostly for the money and don't mind doing the more nasty things to earn 30 more sterlings. I have seen strong players losing purposel...

Re: Is this fair?

I'm sorry for your son, but I think this is a smart rule. As someone already pointed out, with a small number of games it happens very often that, among the players that score better, some have had an easier tournament, and some a more difficult one. In an Open tournament, it may well happen that, f...

Re: Magnus Carlsen piece in the Guardian

Interesting interview. I was impressed by the statements "When I lose I'm like a wounded tiger" and "Should my rating fall under 2700 one day, I will quit chess". I have some 915 ELO points less of him, but the way of reacting to defeats and ELO losses is very similar ... the ELO rating is something...

Re: The bragging thread

Mats, look at this game. I picked it up randomly among a list of 190 games played by Morphy, and I immediately found a game where he sacrificed three pawns and destroyed the opponent. There is a big difference with the variations we discussed up to now: after move 10th there is only one central pawn...

Re: The bragging thread

I doubt that evaluation very much. It depends on what software you use. Anyway, black should play 8...Nc6 instead of 8...Bd7. [Event "?"] [Site "?"] [Date "2013.03.06"] [Round "?"] [White "Analysis"] [Black ""] [Result ""] [ECO "A02"] [PlyCount "22"] 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 d6 3. exd6 Nf6 4. dxc7 Qxc7 5. ...

Re: The bragging thread

8. Nxh2 is not a good move, not only because it loses the exchange, but also because after the check in g3, the king has to go in e2 where it prevents the bishop to develop. A much better move is Bb5+: after that, the queen goes in e2, the king in f1 and white's pieces develop much better, without h...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

Yes, John, I definitely missed something on move 36th, also other people have pointed me out this thing. I was very short of time and my greatest worry was reaching move 40th, after which I would have got the fifteen-minute bonus. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to reach it unwounded. It's true, I of...

Re: The bragging thread

Mats, let me tell you what I think of this position rnb1k2r/ppq2ppp/8/8/3PP1n1/5N2/PPP3Pb/RNBQKB1R w KQkq - 0 8 You have spent a lot of tempos in order to capture the h2 pawn, and your developing advantage is gone. The only thing that you get out of it is that, as you said, the white king will be di...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

Ha-ha, John, you remember that I'm a slow thinker ... but starting the game with one less hour could have put me in serious trouble, all the more so because I'm used to think a lot. In this game, at least until move 39th, I managed quite well because it was a closed game, and I hadn't many long varia...
