I don't agree with this and with some other statements, Geoff, but you always make me laugh a lot!! :-)

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

Interesting point John, indeed black may block the centre completely with 18. ...c5 and a "plan B" is needed. Sincerely, during the game I didn't think much about plan A, plan B, and similars, but went ahead like "First I move and then I think". At that stage of the game, I already had something lik...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

There is no FIDE Rule barring half point byes. Of course the Italians can introduce one for their own tournaments. Thank you Mr. Reuben, I will surely point this out to italian arbiters and organizers. They are referring to a FIDE Rule that doesn't exist. John, undoubtly that was a very demanding d...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

Hello John, nice to hear from you again!! I'm not sure to have understood the expression "doing it the die-hard way", what did you mean? Yes, the centre was so blocked that my dark-squared bishop would have had very little maneuvering space, I thought it was better to give it away. Now I give bishop...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

The story had a funny ending. Since the arbiter didn't give me the half-point bye, on Friday afternoon I started to the tournament's place, which is about 50 Km from my house, but in order to reach it I have to go across the whole city. I found the main road completely blocked because of a strike, a...

Re: Two Knights v Pawn

But white's double sacrifice at moves 56 - 58 was the only chance to hope in a draw? Wouldn't it have been possible, let's say, to give the knight on the 'd' pawn and try to draw with bishop against two knights? Moreover, the 'g' pawn is on a dark square, in some variations black has to defend it fr...

Re: Half-point bye: is it still possible?

Thank you Roger, Alex, Dave and David, I wasn't aware of that resolution of the Italian Federation, the translation is We remember you that … the Federal Council of the Italian Chess Federation, during its last meeting of March 24th, 2012, has decided that … “The FC thinks that a previous reso...

Half-point bye: is it still possible?

I have just asked the arbiter of a tournament that I am going to play near Rome for a first round half-point bye, he replied me that since July 1st, 2012 the FIDE regulations don't allow this any longer. I took a look, though, at the website of the Hampstead FIDE Chess Congress (Adam always keeps me...

Re: The bragging thread

I think it's quite natural to post games to a thread in a chess discussion group. Supposedly, most chessplayers enjoy watching interesting games, even if they aren't GM games. I agree, if in a chess discussion group users can't post chess games, what else can they post? :-) I think that a game, eve...

Re: The bragging thread

Mats Winther, your first game is indeed nice, you exploited the very bad position of his bishop and knight with a nice combination!! I also play often on FICS, probably sometimes we happened to play against each other, what is your nickname? For sure some time ago I have played (and lost) a couple o...

Re: Two unsafe kings

You are right Roger, I let my engine run for some hours (!!) and it seems that by sacrificing the rook at the right moment white gets some drawing chances. I wrote some notes on that variation, that goes no less than 15 moves further: of course I could not cover all the possible developments, very p...

Re: Two unsafe kings

Roger, I do always check the variations I post here with an engine, otherwise I wouldn't be so confident in evaluating the positions!! I always try, though, to extrapolate the ideas that arise from the bare variations, for example after 21. ...Nf4 black manages to win a piece because the white queen...

Two unsafe kings

This time I am posting a game I played nine years ago against an experienced roman master. At that time I was 31 years old, while my opponent was 47 years old. The game soon became very complicated: my pawn structure soon broke into pieces, and I castled just where it was more destroyed. Also my opp...

Re: How many players have won or drawn a game losing there q

Lee, you made me laugh a lot with your comments where you make a fool of your opponent("Whats hes thinking here, only he knows")!! Two years ago I fell exactly in the same trap, my opponent had a knight on f5 and by moving his queen on g4 threatened both mate and my undefended queen on d7. Indeed, y...

Re: Samisch King's Indian

I usually start as white with 1 d4 and then c4 to most replies. If my opponent uses the King's Indian defence then I use the Samisch variation. I have a book which states that black's strategy is to use e5 (or possibly c5) to try to induce white to make the advance d4 - d5. "...try to induce..." ra...
