Re: New Grading List

Vladimir Minko of Wellington College has a grade of 259E. Is that the highest published grade achieved by a British school pupil? The pedant in me wants to point out that he is Russian but, more importantly, the grade is based on a score of 100%. That in itself is impressive but renders the grade t...

Perhaps I should have suggested some restrictions to make it more sporting (not a mega-event like the LCC? Maybe no more than 200 entrants?).
The e2e4 Diamond Jubilee Congress at Gatwick had 90 players in the Premier from 21 different nations.

Re: EU referendum aftermath

Assuming of course that Corbyn can even get on the ballot. There appears to be contrary legal opinion on that score.

Re: Finals day 2 July

What they don't tell you is that..... Surrey Lancs Home director overrules arbiter and denies right of any further appeal .. were Surrey allowed to submit their case? apparently not Bob - is there evidence to support this rather surprising claim? My understanding is that the Controller (in consulta...

Re: EU referendum aftermath

I have a sneaking suspiscion that what will happen now is Article 50 will not be invoked There will be informal negotiations with EU (possibly unofficially and denied) Each Leave promise/pledge will unravel (as is already happening) Team Leave will report that there is no deal to be done with EU on ...

Re: Amusing (Illegal) Way To Win

That'll teach me for answering a question during the football without reading the question properly! I saw the move written as ...d5+ and assumed it meant that black was giving check without looking at the previous moves. Apologies.

I'll look at the question again (but properly) now.

Re: Amusing (Illegal) Way To Win

Take a similar example 1.e3 f5 2.Bb5 d5(+) 3.Qh5# This is a genuine checkmate because the last move 3.Qd1-h5 is legal even though the position is illegal. This is a checkmate in Blitz, Rapid and Standard games. Even in correspondence games as far as I know. I'm sorry, but that is wrong. The Laws of...

Re: Finals day 2 July

However I do not consider it appropriate in this instance. So we're NOT going to be given any clue as to the presumed new evidence which caused the Appeal Committee to reverse the match result ? That is disappointing. I thought the appeals committee had upheld the originally reported match result?

The result is Surrey 7.5 Lancashire 8.5 as originally reported.
But that's not the full story, is it? I was there, and regard that result as ludicrous.
Care to elaborate?

Re: Amusing (Illegal) Way To Win

The laws say 5.1 The game is won by the player who has checkmated his opponent’s king. This immediately ends the game, provided that the move producing the checkmate position was in accordance with Article 3 and Articles 4.2 – 4.7. Article 3 is about moving the pieces. In particular 3.4 The queen ma...

Re: 2016 draw

Seems to me the north Manchester lot should join Lancs in the NCCU and the south Manchester mob play for Cheshire, switching to MCCU. Problem solved  You may want to help Bill O'Rourke, it certainly seems that Dave P does, but: Bloody hell. I thought it obvious the  meant it was a joke.
