Re: The Agon ban of live broadcasting of Candidates games except on its own website

Do we want Agon to make money? Do we want better sponsors for a chess world championship to the detriment of the chess fan enjoyment? I don't give a rats ass about Agon, but I am being realistic. It seems that some folks are arguing that Agon should pay to stage the Candidates (fixed costs, player ...

Re: The Agon ban of live broadcasting of Candidates games except on its own website

It would have been naive to expect every traditional chess broadcaster to comply with the demand You're right. Traditional chess broadcasters don't want to comply with Agon because they have a business model which lets someone else pay to put on a top class event which they then monetize. Agon want...

Re: 2016 draw

I wonder how Joe McPhillips qualifies to play for Lancs, although of course it doesn't matter and no-one would do anything about it if it did I don't know where he was born, but presumably living in Bolton qualifies him for Lancashire {based on the historic county definition} in the same way that l...

e2e4 Gatwick Whitsun Congress 27-30 May 2016

I'm delighted to announce that following the successful e2e4 event at Gatwick, we have agreed 3 further events for 2016 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel. http://www.e2e4.org.uk/images/crowneplaza_gatwick_exterior.jpg The next event is a 7 round event over the Whitsun bank holiday weekend which has four FID...

Re: e2e4 Gatwick Congress 19-21 Feb 2016

Reviews from me for this tournament would include: 1. A great hotel, nice spacious, comfortable, well heated rooms at decent prices; 2. Convenient location, both for foreign and domestic players; 3. Playing conditions, ie space, seating, a/c, lighting etc all good; 4. Playing schedule - one Friday,...

Re: Forum freebie win your club some chess sets

The number of entrants who played at least one game was 159. Embarrassingly for a statto like me, I miscounted the entries when guessing 173 so you might want to double check my maths (FYI A player in the u1700 had 2 byes but is playing in round 3 onwards so counts, whilst another withdraw before r1...

Re: ACP Grand Survey 2016

Personally I only did it once, when FIDE outlawed (briefly) 90' + 30" for norm events. When was that? It was the July 2010 laws. The August 2010 e2e4 event was therefore scheduled for the 5 hour time control. FIDE then announced a delay in the implementation in June 2010 http://www.fide.com/compone...

Re: Sensory Boards and Live Transmission of Games

The DGT does indeed detect each piece individually. The hardware simply reports the position of each piece on the board (or not) every time there is a change. So for the first move the hardware reports something like 4 actions [pawn removed from e2] [pawn arrives on e3] [pawn removed from e3] [pawn ...

"Which of the following time controls would you prefer to be used in tournaments other than official FIDE events with 2 rounds a day? I'd be no more likely to guess right as anyone else. My guess is 173. And my prediction is that I'm wrong!

Re: e2e4 Gatwick Congress : 19-21 February 2016

We're now up to 60 entrants already, which puts this event on course to be huge. I'm already trying to negotiate extra rooms! As I suspected, this is going to be a big event. We're now at 150 entries, with 20 players graded over 200 in the Open. Having visited the hotel yesterday, the refurbishment...

Re: ECF Vacancies

ND: Tradewise was not brought in by a current ECF person. Had you said that the current ECF board had not brought in sponsorship ok, though given they've only had a few months I'd think it was a tad harsh. But you didn;t, you said the ECF had never brought sponsorship. You know you're wrong. I know...
