Re: Tables after round 8 (2012-13 season)

Not sure what the game was like but Sabrina Chevannes (2083) 1-0 v Marcos Collados Camacho (2425) in the Cambridge - Guildford 1 game on the Sunday was a pretty incredible result. One of our guys (Jutes of Kent), Bragi Thorfinnsson could be on for a GM norm with 5.5/6 (only draw v Nigel Short), his ...

Yes perhaps they should subject Justin Bieber to the zero tolerance rule.

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

A quote from the The Sign of the Four (1890) by Conan Doyle comes to mind "How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?" Chap. 6, p. 111 So if he isn't cheating then having to turn up at Pamplona with two friends ...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

After averaging 1950 at Plovdiv Boris Ivanov has just won the Pamplona tournament with 8/9 which is staggering enough in itself but I'll list here who he beat. There are a number of GMs out there getting heartily sick of this farce. In Round 8 Alexei Barsov as White played 1 d4 against him. After th...

Re: Candidates Tournament 2013

I would agree with Roger's first paragraph and probably go a bit further. It's early days yet but if the first three rounds show anything its that Ivanchuk and Gelfand are not likely to win this tournament. Ivanchuk's handling of the Tromp yesterday was exciting to watch 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 e6 3. Nd2 c...

Re: The bragging thread

Love that quote "My computer beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing" Its from the American comedian Emo Phillips. The line has even got its own Facebook page with 228 'likes'. Agree with John Foley though. The whole point of this thread Simon is it should have been you taking Ke...

What's in a name?

European Chess Leagues have teams from towns or cities and that's how they are usually named - boring. The 4ncl is different because a lot of team names are often made up after a night down the local, Sambuca Sharks etc. So I was pleasantly amused to see the results of the 2013 USA Amateur Team East...

Re: Candidates on TV?

Re: Candidates on TV?

Nigel appears to be 3-1 up in this match although the web site is in Persian and the links don't seem to be user-friendly. I can see that there are supposed to be video links with the players thoughts after every six moves but can't seem to access them. Here's a link in case anyone's interested: htt...

Re: Live Games - Round 7

Hmmmm in Div 2 if Poisoned Pawns crush the spirit of Atticus and Oxford crush Wessex then Poisoned Pawns would go through. So maybe one of these two games?

Re: Candidates on TV?

Warming up to the Candidates looks like we've got an updated version of the Master Game in Tehran featuring Nigel Short! Here's the Press Release and link: First Talking Chess match in Tehran In an effort to turn chess into a spectator sport the Iranian Chess Federation (really!) is taking the initi...

Re: The bragging thread

That's a sensational suggestion Geoff but have you ever really done that? I mean asked for their rating and then put JOKE besides an IMs name and if so did it work? Do you reckon if i asked, "do you have a title" to which the reply is proudly "I am an IM" and then putting "not good enough to be a GM...

Re: The bragging thread

That's a well argued post Geoff and perhaps i was a bit harsh with the word "drivel" and apologies to Mats for that. The Morphy game at the centre of the debate was a gambit. One of the chief merits of a gambit usually is that the time lost in taking pawns gives the other side a development advantag...

Re: The bragging thread

Just a quick word to say thanks to Carl for editing some of the more insulting drivel off Mr Winther's last post about me. This is much appreciated. As for the rest of it, its kind of cool to be called narcissistic by someone who declares he's a genius!
