Re: European Club Cup

If anyone wishes to congratulate Barbican and Jutes of Kent in each recording wins over teams in the top half of the list today, don't let anything stop you! Simon's game involved one of his periodic touches of genius, but all the Jutes top four boards played excellently and Ezra Kirk has been bett...

Re: European Club Cup

Breaking news and quite unexpected is that our board 4 Tony Stebbings with his win yesterday reached the magic mark of 2300 and a few minutes ago was presented with a certificate from the Chief Arbiter confirming his rating for his FM title. Well done Tony!!!! Congratulations to Tony, I see that Mr...

Re: European Club Cup

Seems again like most English teams don't think it's worth the expense to send many strong players. We receive nothing from the ECF to subsidise our efforts. I'm paying hotel fees (78 euros a night for 8 nights), airfare from UK and Iceland to Rhodes), entry fees (300 Euros) and registration fees (...

Re: European Club Cup

Round 2 pairings http://euro2013.chessdom.com/results/results-and-pairings-r2-open/ Remind me, obviously we are looking at some very strong teams competing at the top, but lower down are we looking for norm chances? For Jutes I'm hoping for an IM norm from Ezra and a GM norm for Hjorvar. I know he'...

Re: European Club Cup

Ezra was really unlucky to lose that ending, Svidler was watching and it looked as if he was even winning at one point. Great technique from Malakhov it has to be said. Meanwhile team captain was still fuming about John Naylor who ran away and was found outside the hotel on a wall trying in vain to ...

Re: European Club Cup

John Naylor was still on UK time and relaxing in the bath when the team captain rang him to enquire where he was. The team captain is quite upset and is contemplating whether violence should be used.

Re: Tata Steel 2014 Wijk aan Zee

Thanks Mick for the link to the amateur events. Some of the requirements look quite odd. For example: Weekend-three-round event (11, 12, 13 January); max. 520 participants (Never heard of one of these!) Rate of play: 40 moves in 2 hours, followed by 25* minutes extra time p.p. to finish the game, wi...

Re: ECF Elections - Statement by Malcolm Pein

There is definitive guidance on this from the Institute of Directors on the role of NEDs in business (link below in case you're interested). The ECF is a voluntary organisation rather than a business. If it wanted to become a business, it should change its structure to become a Company limited by s...

Re: ECF Elections - Statement by Malcolm Pein

There seems to be a lot of discussion of what a Non Executive Director is or isn't allowed to do. There is definitive guidance on this from the Institute of Directors on the role of NEDs in business (link below in case you're interested). NEDs have just as much a stake in the business as Executive D...

Re: European Youth Chess Championships 2013

More allegations of corruption were cited on the Chessdom and Susan Polgar blog site today and I've given the text below which appear to come from the local Montenegro chess community. In case you're wondering what NGO "Potez" is, so am I. All I know is that this is a non-governmental organisation a...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

A team from the Association of Chess Professionals ("ACP") presented a set of proposals to the FIDE Anti-Cheating Committee a few days ago. Below is a high level summary from the head of that team, the devil will of course be in the detail. For example while they are unsurprisingly proposing that al...

Re: Paris Final: Disappointing Finish

Sorry Kevin you are of course correct. The point I was struggling to make is that when one team agrees to lose and by consequence the other win its seen as outrageous but when both players agree to draw its seen as routine and ok and I can't go along with that as someone may suffer as a consequence ...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

In the final round Ivanov was White v Vasil Vaklinov (2144) on board 8. His new socks don't seem to be performing very well and I think we can safely say it was all his own efforts as he struggled to draw what was a very poor game. A stronger player as black would surely have won that. Here's the li...
