Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

I would largely agree with you regarding the legal principle. However, you could also argue that suspending him might be for his own good as a lot of threats of physical violence have been made against him. If such a threat exists, Ivanov should be free to decide for himself whether this is an issu...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

Suspending him for four months from Bulgarian chess whilst they investigate seems like a prudent step to start with although of course Ivanov has in the past crossed the Bulgarian borders to play in events. Prudent? It rather seems to me that this goes against too many legal principles. Either he d...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

It's a great question as you could argue that suspending him without being found guilty of anything is a restraint of trade in the EU to say the least. The way the Bulgarian authorities seem to have handled it is a bit like an employee being suspended (without pay) while the employers investigate al...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

Cheers Mick, here's another link to that story with a picture of Ivanov not looking very amused. Quite appropriate even though the photo seems to have been taken three years ago. http://www.chess-news.ru/en/node/12151 It will be interesting to see how the Bulgarians intend to investigate this given ...

Re: Chess row in Cork
Roger I think Malcolm means this in conjunction with suspicious behaviour. If you do not leave the board then I doubt there can be any accusations (apart from that Borislav Ivanov thing :? ).
I think Malcolm meant exactly what he said ie that if the moves were say 96% in accordance ...

Re: Candidate Master

So around £42 to FIDE and £33 to ECF. Seems rather a lot for a signed piece of paper. Of course then you've got the problem of explaining to non-chess players what it means when you show them the certificate. You can just imagine how the conversation might go... "Candidate Master eh. Are you like ...

Re: Candidate Master

Thanks Roger. I wondered what the take up rate for the CM title was, at least as it relates to GB & Ireland. Looking at the players rated 2200+ on the FIDE site (both active and inactive) we get the following figures. The first figure is those that have actually claimed the title and the second is t...

Re: Candidate Master

I only claimed the CM title as I realised that I wasn't going to get any higher. I might not have done if it had been on the way up! Achieving a FIDE rating of 2200+ is no mean achievement so congratulations to you Kevin and all those who hold this title. After stating this earlier I thought i migh...

Re: Best Disputes

The FIDE rules applying to Swisses and Team competitions are inconsistent and here's an example which hopefully just meets the criteria of a dispute. In 2012 Bragi Thorfinnsson (Iceland) was on for a GM norm coming into the last round at the Reykjavik Open. But he needed to play someone of a minumum...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

It looks like 1984 all over again as Borislav Ivanov seems to have had his name removed from even the starting lists on most chess web sites for the Veliko Tarnovo tournament in Bulgaria. However, he did play and here is some proof from the DB site with his win against Romabaldoni. http://chess-db.c...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

On the ACP site from a Bulgarian GM: Dear all, Due to the increased level of fraud and suspicions of cheating of lately in chess. I would like to to present you an idea of how to deal with the problem. The idea for anti-cheating commission is fairly simple. You know that in all sports there are is t...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

Seems fate has taken a hand with Borislav Ivanov. He was participating in a Bulgarian tournament, Veliko Tarnovo open and as usual winning it easily. Then his opponents hit on the idea that if he received three defaults he wouldn't win a prize. So IM Sashov Nikolov and GM Drentchev refused to play h...

Re: Wood Green

Bizarre. Ivanchuk's not playing today, he's in the bar with Fiona from Cheddleton following the live games on a laptop.
