Re: ECU General Assembly Resolution on Boycotts

At the World Junior there was another Iranian forfeit against an Israeli. The New Delhi Sportstar quotes : "There was also an unusual ‘walkover’ from the 11th seeded Iranian Aaryan Gholami when pitted against Israel’s Alexander Zlatin in the fourth round. Since there have been many occasions in ches...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Round 6 pairings. Luke is Black v Wang Hao. Seven players in the lead with 4/5. There is a nice tweet from Chess 24 "Shirov is the "lucky" leader who wasn't paired against another leader :)"

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

A Sutovsky post on FB serves as a nice summary for Round 4: "Magnus was not on the verge of losing. He was lost. Deadly and hopelessly. But no, there was a glimmer of a hope - white could win in so many different ways, that Kovalev must have felt himself as a kid in toys-r-us. A choice was so wide. ...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Carlsen just seems to have a way to make his opponents play like babies. I hope Kovalev doesn't go back to his room and hang himself. Yes I can see him sitting there beating himself up over this and wonder whether he will end up losing. Hope not, draw against the world champion is still a good resu...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

While I have (in general) absolutely nothing against Ladies participating, a number of them participating here is rather staggering I had assumed it was boasting rights against Gibraltar. Surely the number of wild cards and rights to decide who they were was part of the sponsorship deal. You're pro...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Round 4 pairings . Luke is doing well in the early going for this tournament on 2.5/3 and now has White against Adhiban. David after winning against Vocaturo now has 2/3 and is White vs Akopian. Ivan Sokolov was musing on FB and is like a lot of us confused by this wild card stuff and wants it clar...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Round 3 pairings and only 4 players left on 100%. I noticed there was a lot of talk today about Giri upsetting the organisers and skipping this tournament so that he would not lose rating points. Here's a ChessBase article to explain why he's doing what he's doing. Can't blame Giri, he's just playi...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Rd 2 pairings and no Israeli for Maghsoodloo. Our guys had a bad day yesterday with just a draw for Luke and seven losses. Round 2 will already be better for England with Dahl Baard getting a bye.

Why isn't Caruana playing in the Candidates?

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

R1 pairings are up and its difficult to know where to start regarding interesting matches with such an incredible field and its going to be a nightmare to choose what to watch. Start time is Thursday 3pm. Six of the top 10 players in the world are choosing not to play (Ding, Giri, Nepo, MVL, Mamedya...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Great photo via a Peter Doggers tweet of the space and view that the players on Boards 1 and 2 will have. Image
Good news that Keith Arkell has got a Wild Card which takes the field to 154 (118 FIDE Qualifiers + 36 Wild Cards)
