As reported by chessbase https://en.chessbase.com/post/the-olympic-dream The 600 million claim is back again Well who saw that coming I thought it had risen to 605 million? Ju Wenjun has just beaten Lagno in a very close match and the article from the event contains the following impressive stat: "...

Chess Put Forward To Join Paris 2024 Olympic Games

There was a bid by FIDE on January 30th to include chess as an additional or demonstration sport In the Paris 2024 Olympics. The article by Peter Doggers is the first time I've seen what's involved in the process: "In what will be a long and complicated process (which includes a lengthy questionnair...

State of Chess: How much money is in the sport?

A couple of researchers for World Chess have put together an interesting article on the amount of money the top chess professionals are making. Don't think anyone is going to be shocked by the conclusions that in 2018 it wasn't very much! At least in terms of prize money as Carlsen may be making qui...

Re: Gibraltar 21 to 29 January 2019

Chess.com report on the last round including the surprising revelation about the winner "Artemiev won £25,000 for his win–not a bad haul and quite useful since he just got married three months ago. Maybe he can now take a taxi to the tournament next year. For this year, he stayed in Spain, crossing ...

Re: Vladimir Kramnik Announces Retirement

' Apparently the Russian chess federation still hopes he can play for them in next year's Olympiad. That might be a more satisfactory way to bow out, always assuming that he felt up to it. TWIC "The President of Russian chess, Andrei Filatov says he wants Kramnik to play at the 44th Olympiad in Khan...

Couple of questions from looking at the Live Ratings for January 2019:

*Kramnik has 'only' lost 24 Elo points and 'only' dropped to number 15 in the world (dropping 8 places)!
Kramnik announces his retirement.

Re: Grand Chess Tour 2019

The newly formatted FIDE Grand Prix danced around the GCT with three of its dates, but the 3rd leg seems to clash with the Romanian leg. I suspect several GP people will decline their invitation, but for players like Nakamura, it'll be interesting to see which one they choose - if indeed they have ...

Round 11 report. I must admit I did wonder if Giri thought he was winning after he played b6 but he knew exactly what he was doing and it worked. Even asking Shankland if he was resigning just to make sure!

Here's the finishing position in Giri-Shankland. As Anish explained afterwards "Sam said he'd had an hallucination and didn't realise the ending with a king on c8 would be drawn too (not just with a king on a8) - what an incredible end to the game!"
