Re: Round-up of less reported events

It's a draw!! By perpetual. Svidler as Black shifts his king between a3 and a4, while Nepomniatchchi gives queen checks fron c6 and f3. "Just theory", but wow!

Re: Round-up of less reported events

Sunday mornings do not necessarily mean quiet chess. Just look at the game Nepomniatchchi - Svidler! By move 21, Svidler has grabbed a rook on a1, and a bishop on f1 ... and his king has wandered to b4! It doesn't look safe, and quite probably it isn't. Svidler is a renowned opening theorist, so may...

Re: Round-up of less reported events

Karjakin was in fact able to hold the position. Perhaps no clear zugzwang?

Re: Round-up of less reported events

It ended up as a draw between Grischuk and Dreev. Both players had to be tactically alert. Grishuk had to backtrack sharply to avoid getting his queen trapped on b4, after taking a pawn there. Of the other really high profile game, Karjakin looks in danger of losing against Kamsky. The tactics from ...

Re: Round-up of less reported events

Peter, interesting question. I am not really sure. I wait to see what is going to happen in the next few months - and a couple of wins this week will push Grischuk up over 2800. I suspect that Nakamura in comparison is slightly overrated by western commentators, but of course anyone who is head and ...

Hey, it doesn't really matter! I suppose that after several irritating incidents, I was getting annoyed about various things. But look at things the other way round. Re: Gradings to be published, on the sidebar?

I have just been flicking through the forum on Chess.com, a deadly exercise, totally borimg, but at least it gives indications of ther online ratings as to why none rated over about 130 would be intereted. Maybe the ECForum is OK! Most of the time I am genuinely uninterested as to one player is grad...

Gradings to be published, on the sidebar?

Should we consider publishing gradings on the sidebar? At the moment, we have name, date of joining, number of posts, and locational (optional). It would seem extremely useful, when assessing some posts, whether a writer is a good player, or just bluffing. Most commercial major forums on chess inclu...

Re: Candidates 2014

A fantastic result by Anand. He had some enormous fortune early on in the tournament, but the main point is that he took full advantage of this. To try to beat Carlsen however, he needs to play up to Carlsen's level, and slightly beyond. Anand's tournament performance was (after round 13) 2866. Carl...

Re: Chess row in Cork

In the mid 70s. the late Harry Baines, with a strong Brummy accent, noted that "Mister Martin, this is not a game!".
There were 14 PxP possibilities to be considered, and an the previous position, there were 14 PxP captures by the opponent ...

Obviously this all goes back a very long way.

Re: Candidates 2014

Aronian has now just grabbed yet another pawn, unwisely so, with 37...Rxf2? (37...Rb8), and still has chances. This is a sad end for his world championship anbitions - too much overoptimistic chess. Next time around, he will have to deal with Caruana... Karjakin is still making progress against Anan...

Re: Candidates 2014

But Aronian after some thought, declined the exchange sac. He now seems substantially worse though.

It seems that the highly industrious Mark Crowther (of TWIC) has gone off-twitter this morning, but no doubt he will still catch up on today's events!

Re: Candidates 2014

I have to admit that I have looked through the last few games rather half-heartedly, assuming that in the last few rounds, Anand would have the technique, and his experience, to halve out the last few games. Now suddenly it starts to look exciting! Anand is a pawn down against Karjakinn, but it is "...

Re: Final weekend (2013-14 season)

The question here for the 4NCL is to try to ensure that a promoted team, especially going up to the top division, is not vastly weaker than the team which was aiming for promotion in the first place. Fines, perhaps?
