Re: Official comment on quality of Candidates Broadcast

I think an audio only feed of the commentary would be a good addition for a lower bandwidth way of keeping track of events when driving for example. I often try and have the audio running through my speakers (I drive a lot for work) but the fact that it's a video feed and that Wales does not have th...

Holywell Chess Club - Clwb Gwyddbwyll Treffynnon

We have a new-ish website. If you want to keep abreast of our struggles in the league this season (I am top board!) then this is the place to do it. :D

Book recomendation

Can anyone recommend a good beginners book, or point me in the direction of any particularly useful online stuff on the petrov defence? I'd like to learn something about it from a black perspective.

I like the "starting out" books, but there doesn't appear to be one on the petrov.

Is everyone called Nigel an unbearable arse?

Surely it's just because they're too busy cleaning behind the fridge?

Re: Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in London

They did well to get the minutes out so quickly. There's more http://www.rusemb.org.uk/press/1983 (Russian Embassy) and http://gbr.rs.gov.ru/en/node/3305 (Rossotrudnichestvo) If you wanted to be charitable, you could say that the latter organisation was akin to the British Council. If you didn't, i...

Re: Best chess tips.

So far so good. 2/2. one deserved and the other not, but I've really enjoyed both games. And I've been trying to utilise Rogers tip on tactical weaknesses. That's a nice one :)

Re: best chess tips.

Are you in the U120’s Dewi? Great little congress Frodsham :) yes I am. Though 120 isn't U120, so pressure is on ;-). I'm just going to enjoy the games, whatever results come will come. I won last night having stupidly thrown a piece away in the opening. I'd rather have lost a game I could be proud...

Re: best chess tips.

 dont leave any pieces loose (that is undefended but not attacked). That's not a particularly good tip for openings if you are looking to play aggressively. Think Italian 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4, Spanish 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 or Queen's Gambit Declined 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. ...

Best chess tips.

What's the best short, easily understood chess tip you can give to improve someones performance? something a player could implement immediately. I have two for starters that have both helped me improve. I understand that most people on here will know what a loose piece is, but not everyone will, so ...

Re: What would you pay for a title?

Neither is English, Scottish, British or UK by the look of it, not that I would want to declare myself either of the last two.

So, as there's not many of them left I guess I'll go with Manx.

Well, I was going to join the arena for a slightly more "serious" place to play online chess.

But whilst my FIDE ID tells me I'm Welsh
