Turkish chessmen

I have a book about chess, and it says that in Turkey pictorial chessmen are now made whose appearance refers to the Arabic names for the chessmen, and it has a photograph showing:- King - top half of a sultan or shah with a big jewelled turban Queen - top half of a man wearing a big fez (i.e. a viz...

Fritz (chess program) query

I have Fritz 13. I play in beginner mode.

How can I make Fritz play to letting me checkmate it, instead of resigning?, so I can practise endgames.

Is there a mechanism for me to ask it for a draw?

Re: Fritz 13 query :: playing back variations

I meant: if I play a game, Fritz 13 may store it. Then, I can tell Fritz to analyse it. The game move display then shows the analysis variations as well as the played moves. Then, I can replay the game later, using the left and right arrows below the board. But, when replaying the game, when I come ...

Fritz 13 query :: playing back variations

If I have played a game with Fritz 13, is there a way of auto-analyzing it, so that when I play the game back, I can make the displayed board follow an analyzed variation instead of the played line?

What are these algebraic notation symbols?

I played a game with Fritz 13 in beginner level, and called a full analysis on it (which I let run while I was out), and the analysis printout ends moves with various symbols. What do they mean? + (This is check.) +- -+ ++- ∓ ± ± but with two underlines instead of one, i.e. a + above a = What ot...

Re: Computer chess

Sorry: I cannot see any buttons below the board on my version.

Someone told me that in the opening Fritz always displays if possible the name of the opening that I am following. How can I make this happen?

Re: Computer chess

Can Fritz 13 be set to a mode of allowing unlimited move takebacks? Chess Titans allowed unlimited move takebacks - against FIDE rules, but it was useful when learning to play chess.

Computer chess

Is there a specific forum or sub-forum for computer chess? When I bought my previous computer, it came with Chess Titans on it. My present computer came with no games on it, not even Winmine and suchlike. So I recently bought Fritz, which had reached version 13. I started it in beginner mode. When I...

Re: Start of the modern move of the queen

From what I have found, existing old chess records mention the new queen and bishop moves as established, or say nothing, but do not say that its use spread from this to that place or area. It seems to me that the two root ideas in these new moves developing were:- (1) Let the queen move 2 squares w...

Re: Start of the modern move of the queen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_chess#Origins_of_the_modern_game Hello. This fits the bill I think. The story goes, that the queen used to be considered a male piece, but at the time it was empowered, Ferdinand and Isabella were on the Spanish throne, Ferdinand was considered weak and Isabe...

Start of the modern move of the queen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_chess#Origins_of_the_modern_game says:- The queen and bishop remained relatively weak until between 1475 AD and 1500 AD, in either Spain, Portugal, France or Italy, the queen's and bishop's modern moves started and spread (Before that, the queen moved 1 square...
