Re: 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 26-30 December 2017

Look at what happened at the London Chess Classic, the prevailing mentality was 'turn up and collect my appearance fee, stay in a hotel that is paid for, test a few new ideas in my repertoire again, bugger off to the next tournament and repeat, remembering not to care how boring the chess is, or how...

Re: 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 26-30 December 2017

I doubt whether any of the players mentioned in the article linked want to go to Saudi itself. This is just about a potential loss of earnings and nothing more.

Re: 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 26-30 December 2017

Earlier this week Houthi rebels fired a long range missile at a target in Riyadh. It was intercepted above the city but the bang could be heard everywhere. I am surprised no one has said anything about this. Last month they fired a missile at the airport also. Does that make Riyadh any less safe th...

Re: 2017 King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 26-30 December 2017

I would say Riyadh is far safer than London but its uncommon for a major chess event to begin in a place that has suffered a missile attack days before. Given that professional chess players are, in general, a rather timid bunch I am surprised nothing much, if anything has been said.

Re: Would you like to become a millionaire?

There is some evidence here concerning Mariotti. Regarding Maia Chiburdanidze, I would need to be back home to attend to that but cannot arrange that until next summer at the earliest.

Re: Would you like to become a millionaire?

Paolo was an engineer and his brother Sergio played for one season for Vauxhall. Maia Chiburdanidzealso played in Bedfordshire in the late 70's. I did speak to Sergio about all this a few years back but he informed me that he had such trouble with his heart that he is unable to remember much at all ...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London?

So it wouldn't be much of a surprise if it ends up being some huge, otherwise disused, building in the Docklands. I just googled "huge, disused building in" and Google auto-completed it to "huge, disused building in Detroit". Poor Detroit. Perhaps Stratford is the other possibility? It should be he...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London?

And I noticed the tickets are priced and there is some account of what to expect, although most if not all venues accommodate what has been stated. It will be announced next month as well as what tournaments may or may not happen prior to the match itself.

Re: Chess history trivia

Who, at a Soviet Championships, once decided to infuriate Botvinnik, described as a young upstart by his opponent, by playing on in a K+R V K+R endgame after all pawns were captured, taking the game into over 100 moves before intervention brought it to a grinding halt?
