Re: Bobby Fischer on BBC 2 Friday 15th May 2020

Just out of curiosity how many Fischers have there been? In England with have had two Adams, generations apart of course. Two Aronians although the first has a vowel missing and we have two Petrosians. I would imagine a strong American junior named Fischer would receive more attention than just abou...

Re: Bobby Fischer on BBC 2 Friday 15th May 2020

'I wouldn't bother watching it if I were you.' Much the same advice could be applied to your post with a rather infantile attitude to violence. Well it could be that or it could be a very subtle reference to a certain chess club long-since closed down but which a few members are aware of and also a...

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

Yes it is much easier than people think because the top players aren't playing with their own money. I'm not particularly good at it but even I can see how they go wrong. There's no way I say that about the chess playing elite, I mean the 2700+ players.

Oh and also something about tea being served in polystyrene cups at train stations. Pot noodle was mentioned, I think the flavour mentioned was boiling water flavour.

Re: Bobby Fischer on BBC 2 Friday 15th May 2020

I wouldn't watch that if I were you. Extremely painful on so many levels. You have to be a typical American to gain any satisfaction from it. If you watch it with a critical mindset you will initially want to have the director shot. Should there be an afterlife, its only a matter of time before Fisc...

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

There was an article funded by FIDE which mentions crabs once. It was a list of foods more rather than less likely to increase your ELO rating. I remember crab was quite high up, and something about England highly unlikely to ever have a world champion because of dairylea on toast, cuppasoup, and fi...

It wasn't him and the only reference to crabs was every world chess champion got crabs from prostitutes during their career.

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

He does live alone but doesn't play chess and since he's gay he has always been unmarried. What market research was that you recall? I remember something coming out of a similar nature, around 1989 but it very different results the only bits I remember were that globally chess players have been the ...

Re: COVid19-What's wrong with UK?

I would hurry up because its going to be banned shortly. There's research showing on-line chess can and does spread Covid.

Ah sincere apologies, it can remove annoying elements we've all had to suffer with like grumpy club members and long drives in bad weather to places not easy to find which have little or no heating even in the winter.

Re: Can online chess ever beat the face-to-face over the board experience?

In opting for a form of communication that is vastly inferior to human contact it's hard to imagine how it could be better. In many respects chess is, culturally speaking, in regression. Yes okay you have more chances to play on line but its not the same, not by a long shot. If it is already the cas...

Re: Making chessmen and chess boards

But the real challenge is, even if you do make your own board and set, then decide to give a friend a game on it to see how it feels, what do you do then? You put all that time into those pieces but never really know what to do with them on the board you made also.

Re: Has anyone figured out how to make a living?

But, to think ahead as we chess players always should, why do you want to do that? It is true digitalization has increased revenue sources, and a youtube channel of your own done differently to the norm to the point where its news-breaking might offer revenue, other than that you need to get your ra...

Re: The Greenbecker Gambit by Ben Graff

I suspected his rating must have been tremendously high given the association Tennesse has with chess excellence. I'd imagine his opponents mostly expected to lose.

I remember in the 80;s people used to joke if your opponents name ends in ov, add 200 Elo points onto his rating.
