Re: Are finals different?

I have certainly noticed over the years that many of the complaints levelled against deciders were made for 'financial' reasons and not aesthetic ones.

Re: Alpha Zero (redux)

If your rating is below ELO 2700 it will make little or no difference. As soon as you deviate from what it uncovers, mistake after mistake after mistake will inevitably follow. All that will come of it is that you will enjoy your games less because you are tying to follow something rather than adher...

Re: Alpha Zero (redux)

Understood as a cultural phenomenon, chess has lots to offer on many levels. What computers do and don't do is of little consequence to all below the upper echelon of our game.

No he isn't, he's just regurgitating some woeful journalism without thinking about what he's said.

Re: Alpha Zero (redux)

The whole thing has been over-hyped. People will continue to enjoy chess for hundreds of years. The fact that a new computer has suddenly got better than the existing computers is of no consequence for most people.

Re: World class time-trouble addicts

I think you need to be able to define what something is before you go forming opinions about whether players are of a certain type. Can you define what time-trouble is, where the threshold lies and to what extent the complexity of the position comes into play? I've seen many instances where a 2700+ ...

Re: World class time-trouble addicts

How many of these have there been? Just immediately I can only think of Reshevsky and Grischuk, but there must have been others, surely? (For the purposes of this discussion let's restrict the definition of "world class" to players who have competed in a Candidates Tournament, allowing whatever cri...

Re: The Secret of Chess

Why did you choose such a cliched title? How about: 'The secrets and mysteries of chess that are mysteriously kept secret by mysterious players who play chess together in secret then mysteriously charge money to be paid into secret bank accounts in exchange for their diagrams of the curious mysterie...

Re: Are finals different?

It's hard to generalize regarding 'the last round' but I have seen over the years many instances where those slightly ahead of the field fix the final game with a quick draw, just to ensure they get their prize. The last time I saw it I missed the game because a draw was agreed after 4 moves, within...

Re: 2018 Wijk aan Zee 12 - 28 January

I do hope Aronian challenges Carlsen. He plays exciting attacking chess, and if we are being honest, all of Carlsen's world championship matches have been rather dull affairs.

Re: 2018 Wijk aan Zee 12 - 28 January

We have another c3 Sicilian from Jones. After 10 moves black has a space advantage and is ahead in development as white's light-squared bishop has already made three moves.

Re: 2018 Wijk aan Zee 12 - 28 January

It was a blunder. I think Danny King gives an accurate assessment of the game on his youtube channel, perhaps he's right that nerves got the better of Gawain.
