Re: Snow Cancellations

Some captains have mistakenly interpreted this as their opponents having defaulted the match. When the home team unilaterally cancels a match with the travelling team still keen to go, that does seem understandable. Cancellation due to adverse weather is concerned with the safety of individuals. As...

Re: Snow Cancellations

Various SCCU captains have advised me that due to adverse weather their matches, scheduled for tomorrow, have been cancelled. Some captains have mistakenly interpreted this as their opponents having defaulted the match. I would urge all captains to try their best to reschedule these matches, althoug...

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

Conditions of Entry for the British Championship are published on its website and although the 2018 event appears not to mention Refunds, the 2016 conditions include: 4) Every effort is made to place entrants in the tournament of their choice but the right is reserved to transfer an entry to another...

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

I am pleased to see that the organisers of Northumbria Chess Masters are clarifying their position on Refunds as given in the Notice appearing above. I don't know whether this is a change of heart or simply better communication of their original offer to players who had withdrawn prior to the event....

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

It reminds me very much of an infamous thread five years ago which was not only removed but which is now unable to be discussed. I am sorry, making such an oblique criticism of a poster's comment or query doesn't carry any weight with me. If there is something that cannot be discussed, presumably f...

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

Returning to the original topic: Obviously different organisers view the matter of refunds differently. So, for one organiser to claim that they are only following the universal practice by not offering refunds can't be accepted because it simply isn't true. What they should say and state in their e...

Re: ECF U18 County Championships 2018

Apparently Kings School, Grantham, did not charge for the venue. The school also ran the snack bar with a selection of hot snacks (pizza, panini, cornish pasties) and drinks. A well run event. Open: 1. Kent (16.5pts), 2. Sussex (16pts), 3. Surrey (15pts), 4. Herts (9.5pts), 5.= Leics, Suffolk (7.5pt...

Re: Clock Problem - What Should the Arbiter Do?

The most important information is missing - What did the Arbiter do and did both players accept his decision?

If the equipment is faulty it should be replaced ! The Arbiter should set time remaining on each players clock as his thinks appropriate.

Is that what happened?

Re: ECF U18 County Championships 2018

Hertfordshire County Junior Teams are being entered by Hertfordshire Schools Chess Association (HSCA). This year Roger has been of great assistance in promoting the ECF U18 tournament at his club and as a result we are able to field a team in both sections. If at all possible Herts will try and loca...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

The point I was trying to make can be summarised as follows: a) Will FIDE processing automatically reject a results file if the date of birth data field is omitted or empty? You would hope that it would only check for date of birth as part of the creation of the record for a new player. Given that ...

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

Personally, on about 3 occasions over 20 years, I have always had my fees refunded, and though I would have accepted a small admin charge (say £2 or £3) and in truth tolerated a much larger one, none was ever levied. Alas, the same couldn't be said for the hotel bookings. I'm pleased to hear that. ...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

I believe a date of birth is only required when registering a new player. Is it still the case that all rating files can only reach FIDE via the ECF office? Yes. The ECF acts as an intermediary between the grader and FIDE. Any grading files I have submitted have always gone through the ECF. Not tha...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

David Sedgewick wrote: A FIDE rating submission file has a mandatory data field for date of birth. If this field is left blank would the file still be processed? If, as I believe is the case, a file with this omission would be rejected, organisers need to know a player's date of birth whether or no...

Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players

1. Has anyone ever encountered difficulty in getting their entry fee refunded after having withdrawn from a tournament due to an unfortunate clash with a prior commitment or other reasonable explanation? 2. What might be considered the minimum notice that one should give to the organisers? 3. Should...

Re: GDPR : What are the implications for LMS systems ?

The current system in which individual graders are supplied with individuals' dates of birth held on a Master Grading Database has been identified as an area of concern since it involves widespread sharing of sensitive personal data. Earlier today, I entered my next few tournaments. I was struck th...
