Re: 2020 European Online Chess Championships

Not clear what else could have been done - the grades we have are FIDE grades. Last time I looked, I think >800 in my section (<2000) so I guess ~4000 players in total. The IM mentioned has just joined with a freakishly low rapid grade

Re: Checkmate Covid-19

Ah yes, Leicester City and the Villa. I was there in 1976 when Chris Nicholl scored all 4 goals - in a 2-2 draw http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/aston_vi ... -1976.html

Re: 2020 European Online Chess Championships

I assumed the Rc7 loss was a mouse error (Rd7 intended?)

I had thought the initial ratings shown were tournament performances - apparently not.

Re: 2020 European Online Chess Championships

Interested to see at least two FMs in this <1700 group. Clear that there is not a consistent correlation between national (ECF) grades and the FIDE grade. My standard and rapidplay grades are both ~175 yet my FIDE grade is 1723 - no problem in this case. A quick glance at some of the other UK player...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

A league I play in is considering the feasibility of re-starting on 1st September. My initial response was that this is entirely unrealistic - but I now wonder if this might have some legs - anything we speculate would have to be severely tested by developments over the next few months and I am sure...

Re: CHO'D Alexander : Drapery Manager ?

CHOD may have wished to hide the title of "Head of Research" - which could be of particular interest to enemy investigators

Nice work to discover this.

Re: 4NCL Online

Successful accessing chess.com now - but still struggling - with LiChess. I seem to get on the site OK but cannot start a game... I'm logged in - it displays my user name - but I am unable to play a game. If I try to play against the computer, I move a pawn but it does not register on the scoresheet...

Re: 4NCL Online

Ah ha! On chess.com, I randomly changed the "connect" detail to the last option (cannot find it again to explain what it was!) - and I got in. Hoorah Looking forward to playing in some of the events being organised.
Thank you again for the help

Re: 4NCL Online

Not NCL-specific - but don't want to start a new thread. I had left off online chess until this weekend - was a regular at chess.com. However, I now find I cannot connect to either chess.com ("Cannot connect because of your internet connection..") or LiChess (try to start a game but just get a whirl...

Spassky lost the first game of his quarter final against Keres in 1965 https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=80065 - this link also includes reference to Spassky's interview with Barden, in which he says "he regarded the 1st game, a loss, as the most satisfying of the match: "I made a very go...

In passing - George Orwell asserted confidently that the work appearing under the byline of Frank Richards (Billy Bunter and others) could not possibly have been by one author - only to find that he was mistaken (http://daviddfriedman.blogspot.com/2011 ... hards.html)

Chess Notes - major downscale

Edward Winter has declared that Chess Notes will be drastically scaled down in this posting on 15th March: "11763. Chess Notes Owing to other commitments, it will be necessary for us to curtail the posting of new C.N. items as from the end of March 2020. Thereafter, additions to the main C.N. page a...

Re: The English Language

Yes it does ... perhaps a sense of the final battle leading up to the mate as well - would have to see the context. But yes, it means checkmating it.
