Re: The English Language

The score of the winner was unmatched - eg First player scored 7, the second and third scored 6.5 etc. If two players had the same top score, then (depending on any tie-break arrangements) they might both have "won" the event - but they would not have won outright.

Re: The English Language

"His bearing was sturdy" means his stance was strong or stable - it would be relatively difficult to knock over someone with a sturdy bearing

Re: The English Language

Please can we see the context - "time line" means the sequence in which things happen ... ideally at which time (which move?) - "line" has the sense of an axis - not a (chess) variation

Re: Media comments on chess

"Jackie Eales (Letters, 22 March) neglects to mention that the PM is also, in chess terms, in zeitnot – in time pressure as the clock runs down. For those wishing to extend flimsy Brexit-chess metaphors, it’s worth noting that repeating the same position three times is a draw. Sandy Ruxton Oxford" G...

Re: Happy Norouz

Exodus 4 records signs apparently shown to Moses to demonstrate the healing and restoring power of God: "6 Then the Lord said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous[a]—it had become as white as snow. 7 “Now put it back ...

Re: Getting back into playing chess ...

I am not clear what Tim would find most helpful - I've emailed him, offering to play a couple of games by email with some friendly commentary - waiting to hear.

There's a team picture at https://en.chessbase.com/post/world-team-ch-2019-round-9 In my ignorance, who is the person 3rd from the left - to the left of Jones as we look at it? Howell on one side, to the other it is Adams, who seems to have lost some height along with some rating points. Oh, apolog...

Re: World Teams 2019

Unfortunately, I think Speelman missed that he would lose the c-pawn - thought he could protect and get 2 pieces for a rook if it were taken. [SetUp "1"] [FEN "r2qr1k1/pp2ppbp/5np1/n7/1QbP4/5NP1/PB3PBP/RNR3K1 w - - 0 15"] After Rxc4, what does Black play? I didn't try to analyse it but I assumed .....
