Re: The English Language

But this person is who he is ...he may be asking the wrong question in the wrong forum - but I don't understand if it's a problem. As long as people are willing to respond, is that a problem? I can see that this is a chess forum - but there is a "Not Chess" section as has been pointed out. If no one...

Re: An early Tony Miles game

Yes, Mr Chandler - I recently picked up Mr Barden's 'Play Better Chess' for 50p at a second hand book stall. I think it would have over-balanced you had you managed to get it into your pocket - this version is hardback and not far off A4. Currently shelved in the lavatory and perused when appropriat...

Re: An early Tony Miles game

More evidence - if it were needed - of some of the many unique contributions made by Len Barden over the years. Thank you sir

Re: The English Language

Definitely "his rights" - really that phrase can mean only one thing - there is only one object - wife - it cannot mean "wife and guards" - as though the latter were a troupe of bodyguards ... sentence would make no sense

Re: An early Tony Miles game

Thank you for posting this - a fine slice of nostalgia for me - a near-contemporary of Tony Miles. I remember Tony demonstrating some of those Dragon ideas and feeling - once again - that he was a clever fellow. I played in the match London Schools vs Birmingham Schools - unwisely declining an offer...

Re: The English Language

"Superior" could imply of a higher rank or status - "Better" implies that it is functionally better. So in the army, a soldier with the rank of Colonel is superior to a Captain - but a particular captain could be the better soldier

Re: 'The Famous Eccles'

I suspect it's one of those phrases of its time and "you had to be there" to appreciate it. I think it has something of the air of "The Great Stupendo", "Batman strikes again", "Hey Presto", "The Real McCoy" etc.

Re: The English Language

Ah! "Sphere of activity" has very little (if anything) to do with balls - it just means the area of things that were done, the things that took place. "Ball of activity" is *not* a synonym - that would mean nothing - so in "Sphere of activity" - sphere and ball are not at all similar.

Re: The English Language

Normally no difference - it's assumed that the ball is (nominally) spherical - not a rugby ball. "Sphere" is a little pompous ... but how are these terms associated with chess?!

Re: Improvement plan for a senior

Many thanks Mr de Coverley.
CCW Shepherd and MA Hunt were indeed of that school and just about that era - though 2 or 3 years older than me (and I was the year above Tony). Ameet Ghasi is the strongest more recent product - but of course much younger.

Re: Improvement plan for a senior

You mean that sleeping with my engineering textbook under my pillow didn't actually do my revision for me? Explains a lot.

OK - a plan is forming - many thanks to all - more suggestions welcome ... first need to retire and prioritise chess against the myriad other things I want to do.
