Re: Chess philosophy

Couldn't agree more. When looking at older chess books, with their airy conclusions based solely on dogmatic positional judgments, buttressed by no tactical lines or just a few sample variations, one is almost invariably left frustrated and unconvinced. The analysis has to be run through a chess en...

Re: European Youth Championships 2014

Ultimately, if the participation is basically funded by parents then I reckon it is up to them, however much we might suspect that they are getting very poor value for their money. There it is: as long as a child has rich parents, no matter how good they are, they can play. Really i don't see the v...

Re: BDO Chess Tournament 2014 Challenger

The link is wrapped in 'img' tags for some reason. http://www.bdochess.nl/2014/challenger/stand/ 5/9, performing above rating, but not *that* good unless I'm missing something? EDIT: Actually, taking a closer look, it is a good performance. Not earth-shattering, but a good solid result, and coming ...

well...I shall bow and move into the background . I wonder if this sort of posting is helpful in encouraging our juniors though ? He might make a GM norm ?...and you dismiss it as being run of the mill ? I think you are misunderstanding me. Of course, it should be celebrated any time any English pl...

but after this tournament performance ? He will rank higher surely ? Yes, but he was over 2300 before his decline. It might well be that he reaches his highest rating afterwards, I don't know enough about his performances though I can look it up quite easily (and I don't particularly care too much)...

Re: PokerStars Isle of Man International 4-12 October 2014

The official website isnt very good . So...assuming Chess results is correct (it showed 1-0 for a while now)...can Alan get a GM norm ? I think this is a more important performance than Short/Howell/Hawkins etc....just my opinion.... A GM norm/IM norm is a very good achievement, however I would thi...

The best way to find out is to have a simul of members here against Fressinet!

The key term is "enthusiasts". It doesn't usually indicate that they actually play the game!

Re: New Rapidplay Rule

That was my opponent who had the tactic, I was on the white side of that game with the extra pawn. It was interesting to find that even international masters miss tactics sometimes, most of the time i find their defences virtually impregnable. Of course IMs miss tactics just as GMs do. Matt Turner ...

There is also a problem with Short-Hawkins where Short has just played a move but his clock is still going... is it really possible that he forgot to press his clock?!

There's an extraordinary number of Indian players. Yes, it is the host country, but it still seems quite a lot to me. Are the rest of the countries restricted to nominate one player each?

And you might end up sending another email because they might have taken note of your first one, not sure if they could commit, wait and decide later and forget your email.

It's very easy to leave it in the 'read' pile and forget about it.

Then wait for all these players to get back to you, ‘cos you can’t ring anyone else in case all the guys you’ve left messages with answer ‘yes’. It should be easier now with email, particularly if you select teams up to a month in advance and the players respond promptly to confirm their eligibilit...
