Re: Do FIDE ratings carry more credibility to you than ECF o

It is hard to say really. In my opinion, more games does tend to give a more reliable rating. However the FIDE rating, at least in England, is tricky simply due to less FIDE games, particularly if you are an amateur, or at least don't play that often. I would say that I am a reasonably active player...

Re: Touch move rule

How about an incident where the arbiter didn't know what to do? I was in disbelief about this since I knew all about this rule pretty much about the time I started playing chess. It was played abroad so I doubt my opponent would even know this forum. (I will still keep his name anonymous however.) T...

Re: Media comments on chess

I think what irritates me about this lazy comparison is that chess has its equivalent of the slugfest, but sports writers think that all games of chess are cautious affairs. In reality, any game of chess could probably be compared with a boxing match - you just have to find a game and a fight of si...

Re: England Olympiad Teams

In terms of Board 1, especially in terms of fighting for medals, you'd really need a 2700 player. Had Luke been a professional, played more chess, and managed to be in the 2700s, then you could argue for Luke to be on board 1 and Adams on 2. I'd agree with Jonathan Rogers and Jack Rudd about Adams o...

A young player in the news: (courtesy of BCM Chess who posted this on Facebook) http://www.courier.co.uk/Tonbridge-child-chess-champ-tipped-greatness/story-21165206-detail/story.html I can see in terms of a local aspect, it is nice to see various achievements of people locally, but do they actually ...

Re: Final weekend (2013-14 season)

Picking up on this thread, I cannot see any indication on the 4NCL website of a spreadsheet detailing every player's results/performances. I appreciate that it takes a while, but I thought it is usually published by now? Or have they stopped doing this? It was done by Neville Belinfante, who is cur...

Re: England Olympiad Teams

An interesting selection for the women's team. Very different from the previous team though stronger, one would say. I am pleased for Akshaya that she has been selected, perhaps as a reserve looking at the team, but nevertheless a good opportunity for her. It is hard for someone else to be given a c...

Re: Winter Olympics

Although I don't like seeing grammar mistakes (I am prone to them too from time to time), I don't let it take over my focus compared to the news story! A news story that may be worth keeping an eye on, given attempts by the current FIDE leadership to promote chess as a winter sport is this. Why is F...
