Re: FIDE Grand Prix 2014-2015

"Around move 30 Karjakin fell into an unusual trap. He went to the player's room and was monitoring the game from the TV screen" I thought it was illegal to analyse on another board!? I don't know it, but I am guessing that 'another board' is with regards to physically moving the pieces instead of ...

Re: Criteria for Fide rated tournaments - Anti-draw rules

In my experience, the consequence of that rule is a significant increase in the number of games drawn by threefold repetition, so it's not very effective at reducing the number of games draw after fairly few moves. The Millionaire Chess open rules don't prohibit claiming draws by repetition before ...

Re: Criteria for Fide rated tournaments - Anti-draw rules

From RdC's comment: No game in the Open Section of the Millionaire Chess Open may be agreed drawn by the two players prior to Black having completed his/her 30th move. Seems sensible enough to have that rule on its own. Now here is where it seems to be muddy: The TD will then objectively decide whet...

Re: Warwick 2015

I must have a different spreadsheet from the one you three have - whose name is in cell A8 in yours? I didn't actually look that carefully at the spreadsheet in terms of searching for his name. It was more being curious why an ex-champion should be excluded, trusting that Roger's observation was co...

Re: World Youth Chess Championship 2014

Seriously impressive gains from Stephen and Amy there. Amy now only needs 38 rating points for the WFM title. Indeed. I also think Oskar's meagre rating gain doesn't really reflect his performance. But I suppose that's what you get with Oskar, I can never understand how someone can be so inconsiste...

Re: Dominic Lawson: Presidential Candidate

So far I have glossed over the fact that Dominic Lawson is a climate change denier, since it is unrelated to the ECF Presidential elections, but does the ECF really want to have someone who wants to draw a pretty picture when it really isn't? While looking at another vocation of mine, Dominic Lawson...

Re: Warwick 2015

There's a long list of qualifiers at http://www.britishchesschampionships.co.uk/2015/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/BCQ-2014-15.xlsx How many entries this will secure for Warwick remains to be seen. It's particularly generous to under 21s as a grade of no more than 180 is needed. Just to point out that...

This is such a typical adult to child conversation that is backward. "Back in my day..." stories are of little consequence to the here and now.

Re: World Youth Chess Championship 2014

Amy lost today against a 2300 as expected (but put up a good fight (LB) ...didnt see the game) Why would you say expected? If you approached the game like that, then you have already lost half the battle! Granted, one result might be more likely than others, but you certainly shouldn't expect someo...

Re: Popularity of various openings

There are far more important things to improve on than preparation, and it certainly isn't why players under 2000 as rated as such. You see numerous club players fall into the same bad positions time and time again, or at best spend half their time on positions that more knowledgeable players could...

Re: World Youth Chess Championship 2014

To get the actual title, you need Norms and the rating. That was what I was referring to when mentioning "high-level" tournaments. Apart from Yang-Fan and Hawkins, are there any other obvious GM candidates on the horizon? Going off tangent a bit with the thread (and probably worth discussing in a n...

Re: World Youth Chess Championship 2014

These results here below Matthew....nothing special at all... Instead of complaining all the time, why don't you put your efforts into helping the English Junior Chess scene instead? As for individual results, they are doing fine. Adam C Taylor was doing well at the start, but seems to have tired o...

That could be why they are under 2000 !

Re: Popularity of various openings

Never heard of it. The Sniper is relatively rare in itself, though there are a few players that play it with some regular occurrence. It is quite potent if White does not know what to reply against it, particularly if the opponent is at least a strong club player. At sub 2000 level 1 d4 tells you t...

Women's World Championship 2014

Now it has been postponed for a few months.

So it looks like that by 2014 it means 2015.
