Re: 2800+ Elo Average for 2nd Sinquefield Cup

I should offer my services to Caruana. If my nose for a cheapo could be combined with his understanding of chess, he might become a very successful player. If being over 2800 and winning the strongest rating tournament ever doesn't constitute being a very successful player, then I don't know what d...

Re: 2800+ Elo Average for 2nd Sinquefield Cup

The latest on the Caruana - Nakamura game is that White has made serious progress in a Berlin endgame with Black facing passed e and g pawns ( move 36). It's one of those generational tests. Kasparov got absolutely nowhere in 2000, so is Caruana a better player, or at least a better prepared player...

Re: 2800+ Elo Average for 2nd Sinquefield Cup

If he wins then, Anand is World Champion again. Only in the way that Karpov was World Champion in 1993, or Khalifman was World Champion whenever that was. What a naive statement. This is a completely different comparison. As I am sure that you can recall, Short beat Karpov in the semi-final and the...

Re: World Senior Chess Championship S50

Mark and Keith are playing too. Assuming you mean Mark Hebden, I can't see his name on the list of entrants. I'm sure you know more than me! But.. wow! Nunn back playing again. No doubt he'd be the overwhelming favourite if it was the same John Nunn at the time of retiring. John Nunn of now.. well,...

Re: 2800+ Elo Average for 2nd Sinquefield Cup

Out of the question? Not impossible, especially given that in St Louis there would be the appetite for the match, and the finance to provide it, and the expertise to market it (TV etc) Is this Malcolm Pein giving the idea a little tickle? https://twitter.com/TelegraphChess/status/507819892540588032...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

You could think of it as an essay with just the one question: "Please explain, fully detailed and with any position diagrams, your game today against Mr. Black. You may use the chess set provided to aid you in playing through this game, and this game only." Then the thinking process could really be ...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

If I was cheating and relying on a computer my "explanations" would probably be something like: Q. Why did you play this really surprising move? A. Because I foresaw the game continuation and thought it was good for me. Q. What were you planning if your opponent had played X instead of Y? A. I hadn...

Re: English Chess & the Little Englander mentality

On a more serious level, our leaders have in recent years asked us to accept that any opponent of Gaddafi or Assad could only be an improvement. How's that working? An even more extraordinary question! As an aside for the conflicts in question: have those leaders actually "asked us"? Not relevant t...

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

Surely one solution to all this is for the player to explain his moves, and to demonstrate his understanding of the game? If there is obvious hesitation or explanations that don't make any sense, then suspicions of cheating are more justifiable. Surely. But... explaining to whom? Take the London Ch...

Re: Media comments on chess

Agreed on reporting quality, though later mentioning that Ashley was the first one (true) he is not the only one. The journalist must not have heard about Pontus Carlsson. or Amon Simutowe of Zambia. He will be known to British players from playing (as an IM) in the 2000 British and also at Hasting...

Re: ECF Elections

Below is a possible Presidential Candidate that should please most of ECF Council: He (?) is unlikely to have his own agenda, views or personality or go "off piste". He will be very capable of shaking hands, patting small children on the head and not claiming expenses. Someone who will enhance the ...

Re: ECF Elections

I expected there would be opposition or at least doubts from those who recalled his close association with RDK. I didn't expect opposition from younger players based on what he has written as a journalist. That is a bit of a generalisation since it is only Rob voicing concerns about this appointmen...

Re: 2800+ Elo Average for 2nd Sinquefield Cup

It is theoretically possible for Caruana to number 1 and Carlsen to be number 2! Caruana can go up to 2850-odd if he keeps winning, and if Carlsen loses a few more....

Unlikely of course, but not a position we would have considered at the start of the tournament!
