Re: Repercussions / Fallout from FIDE Elections?

Yes, the decision was as difficult as that. And that is why the decision to support Makro is not surprising; but the unanimity of the decision, on the other hand, is hard satisfactorily to explain. It would be wrong of me to breach boardroom confidentiality, so I'm not going to report anything beyo...

Re: Renewing ECF membership after a year - advise please

Kevin, I'm not the greatest expert on this, but it will be due to the change of provider of the membership system. Had you been a current (2017 / 18) member you would have been sent an email inviting you to renew and giving you a numerical identifier to use in the new system. I suggest you 'phone th...

I'm not into US politics, but a little surprised. I'd anticipated Phil being successful in the primary, even if he had little hope of unseating the Republican incumbent in November.

Re: New Players Wanted

Clive, I'm sure Peter Farr will respond to your message and make it clear that you would be very welcome to join the Args, although their club night for home matches has traditionally been Wednesday. However, the Args have only existed as a team that plays in the Mid Sussex League and not as a club ...

Re: Director of Women's Chess

There were not separate competitions as such for women's teams at Radebeul. They were mixed in with the gender-open teams. However, separate prizes were awarded to women's only teams. In the 65+ competition we only had one all-women team. That was from Mongolia, and they were awarded a prize as Wome...

Jonathan is now one point ahead of me  . We should definitely have frozen the 2017 grades.
You think you have a problem? I'm definitely in favour of reverting to 2017 grades!

Re: Should the FIDE voting system be reformed and if so how?

Interesting Brian, the MCF is a federation, I hadn't thought Manchester could apply to be a member of FIDE They can't! Quoting FIDE Regulations: "For new members, the country of the federation (with the same boundaries) must be a country or territory that is a member of the International Olympic Co...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election? (Take 2)

From the Electoral Regulations chapter of the FIDE Handbook there's this: 3.7 For all elections a majority of the votes cast, not counting abstentions, shall be required. If there is a tie, the voting is repeated until the tie is broken. If three or more persons are nominated for the same offices o...

Re: Which Candidate Should the ECF Support in the FIDE Presidential Election?

Am I right in thinking that to win the first ballot you need at least 50% of the votes? Unless one candidate then withdraws, all three remain for the second ballot, with the winner now being the one with the most votes. The FIDE Regulations don't seem to specify what happens beyond a first ballot, ...

Re: Director of Women's Chess

[There have of course been cases where the question of unfair discrimination has arisen in this area on this very forum: I remember there was a recent ding-dong about whether it was reasonable at a recent congress to designate one of the two women's toilet blocks for male use as the male facilities...

Re: Director of Women's Chess

I have long been of the opinion that the ECF should use any surplus to create a fund from which individuals could apply for grants to promote chess activity. This essentially is the purpose of The Chess Trust. At the moment its funds are limited to the Richard Haddrell bequest which is dedicated to...

Re: A level maths question

I recall about a quarter of a century ago attending a parents' evening at the secondary school my daughter was about to move up to. I asked a maths teacher whether they still covered things like log tables and slide rules. After some thought she retorted "only out of historical interest". She went o...

Down in the 5a group is L J (John) Cannon, who is still an active player and Chairman of Horsham Chess Club. He's shown as "Newcastle" in the 1954 list, which will have been during his university days. Amongst his achievements has been over 500 appearances in County Championship matches.

Re: Toliet facilities

The venue was a perfectly reasonable community hall. In the reception area there were ladies loos, gents loos and a single disabled loo - except that the ladies loos had been hijacked for the entire weekend and re-labelled as additional gents loos. For venues in community halls and schools, it's of...
