Isle of Man to be one of the Candidates - what about us patzers?

The Isle of Man is to double as one of the new world championship candidates selectors . The new venue will be a golf resort several miles out of town. What will happen to the lower level tournaments for the many chess players outside the world elites? Will they still hold them? If so where? Who is ...

Re: Enforcing rules in League chess

my pet hate is players who don't know the correct etiquette for offering a draw. Presumably those who don't follow the sequence, play move, offer draw, press clock? Against that it can be a relief when you are analysing a position, consider that you may be worse and the opponent makes an illegal dr...

Re: Enforcing rules in League chess

Another guy was using a scorebook and nobody turned a hair. There is nothing in the FIDE Laws of Chess to prohibit writing the moves in your own scorebook unless the competition prescribes a scoresheet. You should of course at all times keep the scorebook either open at the correct page or closed. ...

Are there no Bridge programs that can potentially assist players?
They are awaiting technology which allows them to "see" through the backs of the cards in the other players' hands.

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

These are all interesting anecdotes, but unfortunately the grading system proceeds at the pace of the slowest, or at least the 98th centile. Which prompts the usual question at this time of year - Will the January grades be delayed as usual because key personel have moved seamlessly from Hastings t...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

There's no Gold membership argument. What other arguments are there? Really? So, if I organise a FIDE rated rapid then silver membership is enough? The ECF website seems to be lacking when it comes to information regarding what level of membership is required for the different flavours of competiti...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

Your reference to the Youth League is not really relevant to consideration of the 4NCL as the former is an event exclusively for juniors - such events also exist in this country see Junior 4NCL for example . I only picked one of the many youth leagues because I was looking for an example with lots ...

Re: Div 4 South 2018/19

I also accept that more latitude can be given in Division 4 but I think it has limits. To my mind all divisions should be treated similarly. This may be the entry level, but it is to a national league, and there is a real risk of damage to the brand if the bottom division is some sort of afterthoug...

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Round 13. Two players on 9, who have played each other previously, and 8 players half a point behind on 8.5. While below them carnage reins, cue an outbreak of peace and love (perhaps fear?) on those boards as every single game involving a player on 8.5 or 9 ends in a draw!

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Maybe you are envisaging some sort of system which tries to look at the strength of the opponent floating down before deciding who to float up? No, I am envisaging precisely what I said I was envisaging. In a large event, there will be sufficient high rated players in each group who could be given ...

Anyone contemplating the shortish walk from St Leonards Warrior Square station to the venue, with suitcase, should be warned that it is situated at the highest point of the South Downs.
Just the motivation needed for a New Year's resolution to lose weight and exercise more :-).

Gawain continues to struggle (3/7).
I think if you'd told him a week ago that after 8 rounds he would be only one point behind Carlsen he'd have been happy. It is the World Championship. It's not supposed to be easy.
