This may be the entry level, but it is to a national league, and there is a real risk of damage to the brand if the bottom division is some sort of afterthoug...

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Round 13. Two players on 9, who have played each other previously, and 8 players half a point behind on 8.5. While below them carnage reins, cue an outbreak of peace and love (perhaps fear?) on those boards as every single game involving a player on 8.5 or 9 ends in a draw!

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Maybe you are envisaging some sort of system which tries to look at the strength of the opponent floating down before deciding who to float up? No, I am envisaging precisely what I said I was envisaging. In a large event, there will be sufficient high rated players in each group who could be given ...

Anyone contemplating the shortish walk from St Leonards Warrior Square station to the venue, with suitcase, should be warned that it is situated at the highest point of the South Downs.
Just the motivation needed for a New Year's resolution to lose weight and exercise more :-).

Gawain continues to struggle (3/7).
I think if you'd told him a week ago that after 8 rounds he would be only one point behind Carlsen he'd have been happy. It is the World Championship. It's not supposed to be easy.

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Seems the delay after the first round was a result of a player (Timur Gareyev) winning his game but being awarded a zero for wearing a funny hat. After appeal / second (sensible) thoughts this was reversed.

Carlsen fixed permanently on board 1 as a result of an agreement with Norwegian TV and not looking very happy about it.

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Hmmm 4 pairing arbiters but none of them can click on the "Update to server" button on the page where you enter the results.

Re: 2018 FIDE Rapid & Blitz World Championships

Assuming the fine people of Crawley keep their drones on a leash for the next 8 hours or so, there will also be some British interest in the arbiting team. Out of curiosity, why the need for 4 "pairings arbiters" - https://ratings.fide.com/tournament_details.phtml?event=206539 https://ratings.fide....

How did you delete that post without leaving a trace? When you make a post you have a short period of time during which the delete function is available. I don’t think it’s a period of time. It’s just until somebody else posts on the thread. That seems to make sense as the delete function was gone ...

Was anyone else impressed (not) by the infantile attitude of the HIGNFY panel towards the match during the Friday, November 30th edition.
Surely "infantile" is the whole point of HIGNFY. If you are a member of the target audience it the programme's main appeal.

I had one opponent who had them facing backwards, which is seriously disturbing.
Perhaps a sign he was planning to play the Giuoco Piano?
