Re: 4NCL Online

Sorry to be blunt but a criminal conviction is way worse than no longer being a chess professional overall. For a start- criminal conviction --> cant get a job around children --> cant get a job as an official --> cant be an arbiter/chess coach And when you are wrongly banned for cheating in chess ...

English Youth Online Championships

Just checking in case I've missed it somewhere but am I correct in thinking that the ECF's Fair Play Policy, applicable to this event where entries close on Thursday evening, has yet to appear? Terms & Conditions [extracts]- …… The English Chess Federation’s Fair Play Policy, due to be published on ...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

You have my thanks for your above clarification, Roger. However, it still leaves open to question as to whether you regarded the "offending" post as one of a political, or social-behaviourial opponent, or if you are just the man on the Clapham omnibus who has grown sick & tired of the content of th...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

With all due respect to Alex LOL Definition - "With all due respect is an adverb phrase used to signal that you are about disagree with someone or criticize them. Usually, with all due respect is intended to soften the effect of disagreeing or criticizing someone. It is a polite idiom that is inten...

I think Alex M's suggestion about using a joker mask as a get-out-of-jail-free card for congregating chessplayers is a just a joke and nothing more.
I'm sure you're right and I felt it was fine as a one-off joke but didn't want the topic descending into a DC-centred debate.

Re: ECF Fair Play Policy

It's hard to assess accurately but my strong impression is that there's a widespread lack of enthusiasm, among contributors to this forum, to the exclusion policies and practices followed by Lichess or, for that matter, Chess.com. If that lack of enthusiasm is shared by those responsible for the go...

Re: Chess once we restart over the board

Problem solved. I have put in a bulk order with a supplier for Dominic Cummings masks. Once these arrive normal chess can resume immediately with no worries about breaking sanctions. Claims that the opponent is being distracting by pulling grotesque faces will be dismissed :D On a more serious note...

Re: ECF Fair Play Policy

I presume that this Fair Play Policy is intended to cover events open to all ages, rather than being junior-specific. There's the Chess Challenge version. https://www.delanceyukschoolschesschallenge.com/fair-play-policy-2020/ I do not personally consider it acceptable to delegate decisions on to wh...

Re: 4NCL Online

Was trying to illustrate a point, was probably a bad analogy- i.e. 5 unremarkable moves in a row is not the same as 10 unremarkable moves in a row and not the same as 20 unremarkable moves in a row... but might feel similar for a strong player without looking at the data of thousands of games playe...

Re: 4NCL Online

No disrespect to the "strong human players", but some things can be very counterintuitive in probability/stats, and have an understanding or review the data from thousands of human games (which lichess has, and I doubt most strong chess players have). Each move not being remarkable and having a str...

Re: 4NCL Online

@Matthew- someone can be flagged as 99% cheating in an alerting system and then put on some observation, where additional testing can happen (more resources and more depths of engine analysis for next few games for closer look say) that puts it to 99.99%. It doesn't have to be a straight up simple ...

Re: 4NCL Online

Roger, I can go on the Lichess website now and it tells me that there are 67,000 active players now and 33,000 games in progress. If we use your figures, what would that mean for the number of false positives that we would be getting each day? and is that really credible. Isn't the relevant figure ...

Re: 4NCL Online

Before taking this any further, I'd like to check that my thinking on the probabilities here accords with that of others. This is a situation where I tend to expect Bayes Theorem to apply. For those who aren't mathematically inclined, I'll set out below three examples of how this operates. In each c...

Re: 4NCL Online

I'm still struggling to understand how the Lichess model assesses quality of games. Their 'Insight' facility yields this result for one of my few games: Learn from your mistakes RogerLancaster +55 0 Inaccuracies 0 Mistakes 0 Blunders 5 Average centipawn loss Should I assume from this that the game i...
