I agree. Does anyone disagree ? If that is the consensus here, maybe in the spirit of the ECF Forum and the UK punching above its weight in the world, the ECF should formally propose it to the relevant FIDE committee?? :)

Re: Strongest chess-playing politicians?

Jack Rudd and Chris Kreuzer have given judgement about UK MPs but what about the Bonar Law question: was he the strongest chess player who also became UK PM? Perhaps Peter Hennessy might know??

Re: The Death of League Chess?

I think , it would be relevant to see a graph showing the proportion of all rated games played in Leagues in each of the last five (say) years together with the actual number of such rated League games. In this age of "big data" perhaps the ECF could provide, in due course, disagregated rating based...

Nick "Should we be troubled if directors of Unilever sometimes eat ice cream?" As a small Unilever shareholder, I expect my Unilever directors can be classified as: Exotic, Vanilla, Abstainers , Others(Ben & Jerry's etc). Maybe the ECF could learn much from the Dutch ( or even German) chess federati...

Re: Broadcasting plans for the world championship 2016

I thought the EG Capital sponsor speech was thoughtful and impressive... Maybe he should stand for FIDE President??

I must declare an interest as a mathematician, chess player and a long-standing respector of the best of investment bankers, Russian or otherwise

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

I suppose from both a USA and a Western European perspective, it is good to know Ukraine separates USA and Russia ??

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

I think 16/22 in the Open is really good and England finished above the Netherlands.

Does anyone think England could have done significantly better than Top 10 (approx.)? Analogies with England football not allowed!

USA v Canada, I guess Canada will rarely have won against the USA at chess and perhaps now is not the time!

Thanks for mentioning the Netherlands. I was so shocked at seeing Germany on the list. I looked no further down!

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

I think 15/20 deserves a ten round Top Ten norm.

I am unsure about the wickedness of playing king-maker but an ideal scenario is a final round 2-2 draw with Russia and finishing above the Netherlands this Olympiad!

Maybe "Winter is Coming"? I guess Jack Rudd could estimate the probability that we will get Russia in the last round!

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Tough game against Azerbaijan 1 tomorrow shown on official website

IMHO a draw would be a good result.

I think we should be aiming for a top 10 finish: not to play Russia in the last round!?

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

2-2 seems reasonable result.

I don't really understand Luke's loss . Maybe great players should annotate their losses as well as their wins in New In Chess etc ... but I guess it might give important insights to potential opponents??
