Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

While looking to see whether, the much maligned Reinfeld (another story), played for the USA in Olympiads ,I stumbled across the fact that the USA did not play in the famous Buenos Aires Olympiad of 1939. Does anyone have any explanation?

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Statistically, given ratings, I guess England are hoping for 3-1. Has any English fan added the four expected scores ? Maybe we should hope for better... its Thursday!

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

I am not sure I understand what England "winning ugly" in a chess context means. However Middlesex Tigers arguably have the same problem against the mighty Yorkshire Heffalumps in the County Championship Open. One possible approach is that at least some players have a one of "Draw is OK" or "Win at ...

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Without h and g pawns, the good position of Black's King , which is doubtless not accidental, with luck might result in a book (Averbakh) draw. Time seems to favour Mickey!

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Yes, IMHO too 3-1 would be a calm, and good team result after the "obliteration" (Chess24) of yesterday. Although on a rating basis, I guess it is the approximate par result.

I completely agree about Gawain too. I guess Luke must be tempted to settle for a draw!

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Mickey's game looks very drawish. I guess 7.5-0.5 would be really good after, as Chess24 reported , we were " obliterated " by our Dutch friends yesterday!?

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

No name in David Hooper's 1960's book but lots of games in Chess24 Opening Tree pane. I guess since it's the Petroff , Obliteration Variation might possibly be appropriate?

Can anyone suggest a cunning plan for Luke to win the R+P ending, not on time?

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Assuming the England team achieves a 2-2 draw against our similar neighbours the Netherlands , I guess we are still on track to achieve an above ranking final result.

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

At the risk of distracting attention from Keith's important point, do the Welsh women face the 9 year old polylingual Monaco star?

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

At the risk of sounding like a fanatical England supporter, we do seem to outgrade our opponents on all boards in both matches. Thus to lose one team will need to play like England footballers against iceland :) ??

Re: 2016 Olympiad - Baku

Arguably a disaster in Round 3 is the last thing England needs.

Notwithststanding Mickey's heroic efforts today, if for example we get Russia in Round 3 , arguably IMHO Mickey should play to reduce the disaster risk.
