Re: Stuart Milner-Barry, Messenger & Chess Player

According to the recent film 'The Imitation Game' (about Alan Turing) is was Hugh Alexander, not Milner-Barry, who went to Churchill to ask for more money. Thanks Neill and Brian. Since posting I checked Sinclair McKay's (2010) book on Bletchley Park, page161 has the PM letter, p162 the story menti...

Stuart Milner-Barry, Messenger & Chess Player

The BBC programme on Weichman at Bletchley Park on Monday 9.00 p.m. mentioned he shared an office with the late, great Stuart Milner-Barry. My vague recollection, from an obituary somewhere, is that Stuart hand delivered the request ,which he co-authored, to Churchill for more resources early in the...

Re: A Proposal to the FIDE President

Can we get FIDE to take over the Chilcot enquiry? Kevin what are you thinking of,,, chess, not even FIDE , needs Maxwellisation? Maxwellisation allows those who disagree with what a draft, of national importance, says about them to cause major delay arguably against the national interest...just thi...

Re: A Proposal to the FIDE President

"The proposal of Mr Filatov was met with applause from the audience of the Executive Board"

No cursing, even in French.... makes you appreciate ECF governance. Perhaps the ECF Home director and Commercial director should be told by the CEO to draft an advisory letter against??

Re: Maladministration in the Handling of Complaints

The annual Andrew and Ravi show is a good thing which I have enjoyed for years: this year there were clearly technical (possibly budgetary) problems An ECF maladminstration complaints procedure, to improve ECF administration, that applies to all Directors and that tries to avoid vexatious complaints...

Re: World Cup Baku 10 September to 4 October 2015: Tiger dimension

Fun look at each player's odds chessbynumbers According to the table at the bottom, they believe that a 50 point rating advantage gives a player a 67% chance of advancing. I've got my doubts about that - it's unclear how they handle draws. ... (... after factoring in a white advantage of 40 ELO) In...

Re: World Cup Baku 10 September to 4 October 2015

Tonight (1 Sept) Aronian has just confirmed he's going to Baku next week and hopes for peace, in interview with Maurice Ashley after winning the SInquefield Cup. Hello, yes saw that. Hopefully he will continue his good form there. If we see pigs flying over the board then perhaps we'll see peace be...

Re: Drawing tendencies

I have cut down my draw percentage to about 60%, by not offering very short , say less than twenty move, draws.

One route to happily reducing draws is to enjoy playing unbalanced, if equal, endgames.

Re: Tigers v Heffalumps

Martin Carpenter wisely wrote, "I think the main thing is to make sure you've got a 'realistic' narrative of how you might draw/win the match. If your expected scoreline over 8 boards is 3-5 or 3.5 - 4.5 then that narrative is basically just playing well..." .... but maybe all the other ideas includ...

Tigers v Heffalumps

Simon Webb's anti-Heffalump strategy is well known: the weaker Tiger should play for a win against the stronger Heffalump by heading for complicated or unclear positions such that neither player has much idea what to do and hope that the Heffalump makes a serious mistake first. Less well known is We...

Re: Cheating in chess

Does England have a representative on the FIDE cheating committee or does Brusells have competence.

Perhaps a former British champion with the appropriate gravitas such as say Bill Hartston might be appropriate??

Re: Estimating White's Advantage

FIDE has details of all individual rated games, including colour, since 2007. I expect I can get this. edit: Having read Roger's post above, is his figure of 53%, which looks entirely credible, in fact all that is needed? Roger and Nick, thanks very much. As Nick might have guessed this is also par...

Estimating White's Advantage

In practice,White doubtless gets a higher % score than Black. Does anyone know of reliable analysis of the variation in this facet of ECF (or even FIDE) stats? Given the approximate linear relationship between rating difference and expected score implicit in the ECF system, I guess such information ...

Limericks & Behaviour In Chess Teams

Before a move is made, when I am playing a roughly equal opponent (say a rating difference of plus or minus 10 ECF grading points) or when playing someone who quotes an appropriate limerick, I tend to aim for a draw. However I wonder if, in the interests of team victory, I should aim not to lose if ...
