Re: The Death Of Chess Engines

IMHO, Tablebases, game databases and chess engines are wonderful tools. I guess there are plague like consequences, like cheating and the fear of cheating, with chess engines. However they have enriched the understanding of many players and the educational benefit of chess for children. Long live ch...

Twenty Council members block change... Maybe Chris Fegan will come up with a cunning plan!

Re: Scandinavian with d3 instead of d4

Wahls et al. in "the Modern Scandinavian", New in Chess, 2011, page 355, says of 5.d3 "is a solid line against which Black should be able to equalise... 5..Bg4 , 5...c6."

Re: "Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced his resignation as FIDE President"

Like many, I don't understand these things but...should the ECF (enthusiastically?) welcome Mr Makropoulos as Acting President ?...or should Malcolm Pein's team have a cunning plan?

Re: "Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced his resignation as FIDE President"

ChessBase reports a sensational new development.

David, I trust your April 1 post is deadly serious and Malcolm wins but...

in Star Wars analogy terms KI is clearly the Emperor: does that make Malcolm Pein a Yoda character??

Re: National Chess Library closure: Cunning Plan

Maybe, a possible good home for much of the Library , and a cost-effective ECF approach, is to donate it to the Dutch collection in the Hague . :( :)

Re: Possible Voting Reform

IMHO, I hope that some form of Option 2 or Option 3 is approved in October with more influence/ power to Direct Members. However given the imperfections of governance, even on this side of the Atlantic, I do hope there will to a formal quinquennial review in 2023 (say) to agree improvements to the 2...

Re: am I the only person who hates Armageddon Chess?

How about this wild idea. If Carlsen and Karjakin draw all 12 games, they share the title and a rematch takes place in due course. Great. An even wickeder idea, to disincentivise 12 draws, is that in the event of all 12 games drawn, so first ( or last??) winner cannot be used, the title should reve...

Re: Above My Pay Grade......

Is the Queen right and if she is what does the seating plan look like? Yes: a simple greedy algorithm works. Q on g2 Rooks on f1 and h3 . This reduces possible squares for Black pieces to a 5x5 area. Knights on c7 and c6 to take as many squares as possible of that 5x5 area. Similarly bishops on c8 ...
