Rank and File letters and numbers preference.

Rank and File letters and numbers preference.

Do you like the A-H and 1-8 numbers on the set or prefer that it not be there? I quite like it there but once started a league game with it the wrong way round. After a few moves we both decided to stop the game and rearrange the pieces correctly.

Both players castling queenside – rare?

“It is common for both players to castle kingside, and rare for both players to castle queenside” :? Found this so called fact on Wikipedia. Hadn’t noticed this myself but now I think about it, it’s probably the rarest set up out of the 4 possible both side castling options. Should still be lots of ...

Re: Clock Problem - What Should the Arbiter Do?

Any game where an increment is NOT being used should be played with a mechanical wind up clock. They are just easier to use for anything regarding: . adding 2 min penalty .someone forgetting to press it and thus the clock miscounts the move . Battery running out or bug in the system where the clock ...

Curious starting position. Just wondering what Black played instead of c or exd3 last move or a few moves ago.
Was thinking the same. How is the Knight still alive? :?:

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

p.s they can transmit big brother live 24 hours a day hogging up the E4 channel. Yes, because that's the sort of program they think their channel's target audience will want to watch, and is the best balance between cost of production and audience figures to secure enough advertising revenue. Which...

Re: Attracting new players to the game; who is responsible?

If we could get the TV coverage we got in 1993 or even the BBC highlights program in the mid 90s then it might attract more players. We have lots of channels out there now but nothing chess related ever comes on. I once saw Backgammon on Eurosport but it was a rarity. p.s they can transmit big broth...

Re: Surprise discovery in laws of chess

I had a league game 2 days ago where my opponent didn't press my clock thus giving me some free thinking time. I made my move and noticed my button was already pushed so I quickly pressed his button and then mine half a second later. Didn't want to interupt the move order as we are playing 34 moves ...

Mobile phone ringing during a game.

Mobile phone ringing during a game. Recently had a league match where an opponent’s mobile phone rang while he had a totally winning position. 2 moves away from forcing checkmate and the young student’s mobile ringer went off loudly. The player protested that he shouldn’t lose the game due it being ...

The main difference between the Reti and the English?

The main difference between the Reti and the English?

Would someone care to explain the obvious or main difference between these 2 openings please as I seem to get them confused or merged more often than not. Is it simply down to move order?

Thanks

panic. Get tactical. Offer a draw.
