Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

That is useful. ALthough I think qualification ok for Wang Hao if Caruana beats Naka, rather than all draws. It still feels like Wang Hao is the player with the biggest decision to make. Long experience of seeing top players go safety first in last rounds, and his willingness to draw a dull game wit...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

I missed that and is true, and maybe good news for Naka. Although I still expect Fabi to be conservative with Black

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

So, predictions: Naka-Caruana - petroff, in which Naka does not get much and Fabi closes down the game, because with his superior tiebreak a draw guarantees the tournament win Aronian-Carlsen Rossilimo, Lev needs to win, since he has already seen Wang draw. He tries something creative and loses Alek...

Am I correct in writing that round nine pairings will be Aronian v Anton and Carlsen (upfloated) v Caruana?

Re: Council Papers are out

The expectation of the silver and gold members reps it would be a quiet meeting broadly true in my opinion. The only ECF meeting I have been to that wrapped up substantially early. Perhaps if Mike or Malcolm had been able to attend the discussion would have been different. I might bang on about stra...

Re: Development Officer appointment

No explicit discussion on this point that I recall. We got a confirmation on the academy tender in this year's papers. You might want to set a diary memo for this time next year...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

Luke has a shot at England #1 on live ratings today, for the first time if I recall correctly. Admittedly beating Fabi not entirely straightforward, but may stay relevant regardless of todays game if continues to have a good tournament.

Re: Development Officer appointment

It is difficult to know whether to comment on such threads isn't it? Generally I am very pleased that the ECF have managed to get funding from the chess trust for a Development Officer and appointed someone who is well respected, notwithstanding my reservation about the likelihood of success. But I ...

Re: Council Papers are out

I got the impression a donation to the chess trust might now be the preferred option. I did not get a reply when I asked a few years ago and downgraded to gold in high dudgeon...

Re: FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2019 - Isle of Man

I suppose likely round 3 before we start to see contenders playing each other, so nice to have some local interest too. The revised wildcard rules mean that there is unlikely to be anyone really unexpected qualifying through that route. But my guess is we will see quite a few players outside the top...

Re: Council Papers are out

There are unrelenting critics and there are also those who criticise isolated decisions sometimes with merit but the cumulative effect is perhaps missed by many people. I have a bit of sympathy with the sentiment. But one mans accumulation of criticism is another mans polite enquiry why there are n...

er, right, this is going to make me look bad. But on the basis better me now than someone else later - are we sure Paignton qualified under regulation E this year?

Re: FIDE Open London Chess Classic

I was hoping to play in a tournament in Prague over the summer, but work circumstances meant I had to withdraw a few days before it started. I was expecting the organiser to be annoyed, and maybe he was, but I got a friendly email listing some other events. I guess is quite common.

Re: World Cup Knockout 2019

For the theory nerd, a pity Grischuk seems to have forgotten the move order. Would have been interesting to see Ding's prep in that line.

Xiong's line has a reputation for being very drawish. I guess he is in safety first mode after yesterday's epic tiebreak.
