Press conferences with the players

I'm a bit sad that these are not part of the LCC coverage this year. I found the 10 or 15 minutes with the players after the game the absolute highlight as a spectator. I don't want to criticise the St Louis coverage too strongly - they have a format that they must believe in, and I understand why l...

Re: British Knockout Championship

It is looking likely their will be playoffs in Short - Fernandez and McShane-Hawkins

Is it wrong that I'm quite looking forward to Short moaning about the schedule?

Re: Media comments on chess

The Guardian's daily football newsletter The Fiver starts as follows today ITALIAN BISHOPS AND SPANISH OPENINGS? The world is ridiculous. This week The Fiver has marvelled at the frothy-mouthed excitement that has been generated among nerdy folk with even more time on their hands than us by watching...

Re: WC Match 2016 - New York 10-30 November

I have found most of the games very interesting, but I understand many people have not.

However I don't really see the problem as openings. I think this is about the players who are in the final.

MVL-Topalov would be entirely different, even with the same rules.

Number of games in world championship matches

The discussion of the current short match, made me curious about past championships. The 24 game matches for the period 1951 -> 1972 and 1985 -1990 are still influencing our expectation as to what is normal for a world championship match. I don't remember ever reading anything about how the 1951 FID...

Re: World Championship Final Round Predictions

Indeed Jonathan, maybe a hint at QGD. But slightly different after 2.nf3 which discourages e6 a bit.

So Re1 anti-Berlin in fact. Very cautious, and looks like those predicting a quick draw were right

Jan Gustafsson arguing probably a good match strategy if Magnus thinks he is stronger in rapid.

Re: World Championship Final Round Predictions

I've been surprised Magnus hasn't gone after the QID, since it looks like the weakest point of Sergey's armour. All the other elite GMs are playing 3...d5 instead of 3...b6 at the moment. Maybe Magnus is giving the QGD due respect, but I was expecting at least an enquiry as to Sergey's main defence....

They'd need to find a repetition I think for Sofia-lite rules. But I expect Magnus will at least try to play a long game.
