Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

I'm not stalking anybody but you might like to think twice before advising others on how to conduct civil discourse. This bloke obviously doesn't like me, but I assume he's harmless. Is there anything I ought to know? I suggest you say something critical of me or Roger to win Jon over :-) He is a w...

Re: The Irish International Open 2019

Probably better if the arbiters don't know the computer evaluation of a position too. There was a nice passage in Dominic Lawson's book relating a moment when Short played a novelty in his candidates match against Karpov. Karpov fixed a stare on Lawson in the audience. He knew Lawson was part of Sho...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

I think the word vilification is too strong and i suppose I should say so because agreement with Nick's other point "Is that what this is supposed to be about?" is why I decided to contribute to this thread. The irony of an argument for moderation inflaming opinion is apparent to me. Too much me, I ...

Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF

Most of those volunteers manage to refrain from maligning ECF volunteers. Which makes the "I'm as mad as hell and not going to take it anymore" tone at the meeting even more surprising. I think those at the meeting will probably contextualise Tim's post as defending himself not attacking anyone. If...

maybe they have the same situation as the Berks league where everyone is desperate to be relegated :-)

True Roger. I have to commend Tim and particularly Angus for handling personal criticism with more dignity than I would have managed.

I voted as I planned to in advance in the end, but I thought they both made a sympathetic case in difficult circumstances.

Re: ECF Supporter

A couple of directors did ask me about whether I though parents would be interested in social membership, so I think still a live idea.

I'm not really convinced yet, I think ECF membership is for competitive players.

Re: April Council meeting 2019

I think so Angus. I decided I would abstain, other things being equal, before the meeting. But I am also a bit cautious about anything proposed at the last minute, and that probably true of some other people too. Generally I have been quite impressed by Chris's work so far as Women's Director. A sha...

Re: GRENKE Classic

I was watching Carlsen-Anand live. Leko was baffled that Anand let Magnus get in his WC prep, but to Jonathan's point, that is one of the games Carlsen did not win. I agree Magnus at full power is probably intimidating to even Svidler and MVL. But I don't think it is coincidental that a match with a...

Re: FIDE Regain Control of World Championship Match and Candidates Tournament

I'm not sure we really need a penalty. Even at the height of a match with Kramnik-Topalov levels of bad feeling I cannot see a reason why the players would agree a draw against the rules

I though the announcement was good news overall, including the revamp of the women's cycle.

Re: Membership fees resolution (from NCCU)

The ECF two major areas of expenditure are and always have been its staffed office and the International budget and its income has been a tax on the chess players whether levied at an organisation level or per head. This was indeed reinforced by the meeting. David Eustace did not agree with my math...

Re: April Council meeting 2019

It was a light-hearted comment based on Richard's habit of asking for the result of votes to be repeated, and in fairness everyone was amused (we could not tell if Mike was saying 119 or 190 at the back)

Re: April Council meeting 2019

The board got its membership rises and budget through without any significant difficulties. The only close vote was on Chris Fegan's county championship proposal, which was entirely redrafted but narrowly lost anyway. I'd describe the meeting as fractious. Another depressing ECF meeting for me, othe...
