Re: ECF Grading Proposals

People complained for years that the ECF didn't consult with people before making decisions; and now that it does do that more effectively, people complain that the ECF isn't doing the consultation properly. I'm beginning to think that the main takeaway from that shift is that actually, the people ...

Re: Grand Chess Tour - Sinquefield Cup 2019

One thing can definitely be said - the supposed "anti-draw" measures at this event have been an unequivocal failure. It true that there have been many more draws than the same players in Zagreb. I suppose I could argue faffing around with time controls were partly responsible for Aronian losing to ...

Re: Membership

Hi Ian - Paul Shepherd is the Surrey Rep to the ECF. They do do more than just grading, but I think you will find him sympathetic to your general point.

Re: Grand Chess Tour - Sinquefield Cup 2019

I don't think 100 Endgames You Must Know can have been on Justin's childhood reading list. But at this point anyone who does not know the blunders made by both players in Capablanca - Janowski should hang their head in shame! I think one of the things that made the Nepo-Naka ending fascinating was c...

Merging membership and grading numbers

I have been to a couple of AGMs where the proposed grading changes were being discussed. Reminded me of this topic. My understanding - admittedly based mainly on on a conversation with Richard Haddrell at least five years ago - is that the work around grading, both by the graders and centrally, is m...

Re: Grand Chess Tour - Sinquefield Cup 2019

you are a hard man Chris! Of course there is always a moment when the loser makes a critical error, but I thought Nepo's pressing in that bishop ending was worthy of Magnus on top form.

Re: Grand Chess Tour - Sinquefield Cup 2019

Round 4 pairings and despite the draws the chess is interesting and Seirawan's commentary is excellent. Five hours free chess tuition per evening in cutting edge theory using the games of the top players in the world. What more could you ask for? I know that was rhetorical, but as I have said befor...

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

The top four England players are remarkably closely rated at the moment. From 2700chess:

41 ↓2 Howell 2694.2 −2.8
42 Jones 2692.0 0.0
43 Sadler 2692.0 0.0
44 ↑4 Adams 2691.5 +1.5

Re: British Championship Congress 2019

While we are waiting for Jonathan to come up with some sort of predictions game, I'll get in first with a very bland set: Champion: Howell, given Adams has been quite inactive and the big rating gap to everyone else. Women's Champion: Houska, probably by at least a full point U21: Wadsworth, I might...

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't although there are people better qualified to comment on burden of proof than me, my LLB notwithstanding.
