Re: Director of Women's Chess

There is a couple of points re this Director of Womens Chess matter, and Casual Chess, I think it is very commendable that Amanda Ross runs Casual Chess (local chess needs people running clubs up and country with a focus on Widening Participation), however, there are a couple of points I noted in Fi...

Re: Director of Women's Chess

I must admit I was not expecting to see this particular headline at this point, I think if I was to use terms of my generation, my initial thought was "that was quite woke of the ECF!" [If you urban dictionary it, you may find some appropriate definitions]. Anyhow, there are a few things to say here...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Statistics at Richard Hadrell's old site. http://www.sccu-chess.com/archive/1516/grad.htm http://www.sccu-chess.com/archive/1011/grad.htm http://www.sccu-chess.com/archive/0203/grad.htm If you read old Congress reports from the 1970s and 1980s the numbers participating were much higher than today. ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Naturally, one of these indicators is the performance of the international English teams. BUT, it is essentially a high level indicator (something to consider after all the other things mentioned earlier) - I don't believe is a helpful indicator of the health of English chess at the grassroots. In ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

If we look at objectives, I would argue the ECF only has one objective, which is to facilitate more chess being played by more people in the country. Just more chess or also better chess? More - because as a trend, over time people get better the more they play The way we judge this objective COULD...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

i think Alex's colleagues on the Board would share your astonishment. it's certainly an objective, but is certainly not the raison d'etre. Yes, the ECF has a number of objectives. If I had to rank a list of ECF objectives, I'd probably put successful England teams at number 1. If we had 100,000 gra...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

If so, please direct me to the correct figures? Try looking at the income. Okay - I may have zoomed in too much, and my laptop was playing up. So the ECF Academy brings in £53,000 of income and costs £72,000 of expenditure? Would that now be correct? [Edit: just re-read your comment, I was being a ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

This proved contentious, despite a jovial remark that the effective increase for current bronze members was £4 – roughly a pint of beer – I was reminded by a member of the Board that if the £1 price increase in Item 6 caused anguish, then this would be 4 times the anguish… Sorites paradox . When do...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

I believe the first card vote was on 8a. The only issue that was voted on earlier and was not unanimously passed was the propsal regarding the international budget, which was decided on hand vote. Fair enough, I recall Card 2 being used, so assumed a card 1 had been used in vote taking place before...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

In summary, from increasing the amount of chess played by established players, the Standard membership would make it more simple for new players to join as members, instead of having to first decide whether they want to play League chess and/or Congress chess, the Standard membership would give new...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

really facilitate the growth of local chess in our "Warwickshire-ish" area. If you run a closed shop event for ECF members only, you might be increasing the amount of chess played by established players, but what you aren't doing is increasing the number of players. Which one is the priority? This ...

Re: ECF Finance meeting 2018

Thanks, always useful to see these reports. Can anyone give a more detailed report on the budget? Was the position on international spending raised? Apologies - I was late and missed the bit on International Spending, I was also asked by Warwick University to ask about details of ECF Academy spendi...
