Re: National Club

Nineteen teams now. That figure includes three from the London League, which is a pretty good turn out, isn’t it? The split goes five teams in each of the Open and the Average 2000 groups, while there’s nine in the Average 1700 section. Let’s hope for a few more if only to even out the odds and avoi...

Re: National Club

A big entry from Hull teams on Monday - four in total. Numbers are up to a promising 13 now. Come and play chess and see the famous phone boxes! We are chess players afterall.

Re: National Club

Nine teams so far - three in each section. Any more? Hull can look at its best in the Autumn can’t it?

Re: The ACO is back!

We are fortunate at ACO events to have the luxury of English GM Daniel King, GM Zigurds Lanka from Latvia and GM Spyridon Skembris from Crete sitting in the analysis area providing advice and support at the game postmortems (as well as giving seminars and playing simuls). At the end of the tournamen...

Re: Thanet Congress

One week to go until the Thanet Congress. Details here https://congress.org.uk/congress/215/home. A reminder that this year it doubles for the SCCU championship with the highest placed eligible player from inside the Union (which includes London) winning the Glenroy Cup, the Union’s nomination to th...

Re: British Championship 2023

A Letter from Leicester: There were no major shocks. Michael Adams won the Championship. Brandon Clarke was joint winner of the Major Open after taking two byes at the start. He shared with Andrew Lewis, Aditya Versa and Mikhall Sedykh. Keith Arkell won the junior seniors while Alan Plunnett, Sheli...

Re: British Championship 2023

It’s been raining cats & dogs in Leicester this evening. Last games in a huge weekender today. Thing is that when you’re playing two games a day (and especially if you’ve won them both) the weather isn’t that important. There was a rousing round of applause for the Arbiters and Organisers (and Jack ...

Re: British Championship 2023

And they’re off! A smooth train ride into Leicester yesterday afternoon. I hadn’t appreciated it would be the first stop after St Pancras I’d double-booked a coach as insurance against any after shock from the previous day’s strike. In the end that wasn’t needed, but I was amused to get an email aro...

Re: British Championship 2023

Cool! Another 52 entries since yesterday morning. The figure has now smashed into 1400 blowing away the previous record high of 1142 from Torquay last year. A fabulous response from the chess community - a pat on the back to all those who have entered. Who'd have thought Leicester (of all places) wo...

Re: British Championship 2023

The clock’s ticking. Another 32 entries were added over the weekend. The overall figure is now 1348. It’s a record 244 names down for the weekender and there’s bound to be a few more before Wednesday’s deadline - late entries are par for the course at weekend congresses. While half of Europe boils i...

Re: British Championship 2023

I hope we're all in the same Hall I would rather hope we aren't, particularly during Rapidplay and Blitz tournaments when the clock bashing and milling around at the end of rounds and between rounds can disturb the concentration of those playing longer games. Agreed - there's a junior blitz event s...

Re: British Championship 2023

One more thing. I hope we're all in the same Hall (and there'll be enough tables & sets!). On the Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons there'll be 500+ players.

Photographers - It's going to make a great picture.

Re: British Championship 2023

Records are there to be broken. It’s reported in the 100 years History of the British Chess Championships that Edinburgh 2003 had the biggest attendance recorded of 1009. Numbers had been boosted by about 100 players from India. With only two ENG players in the Championship top 10 and the Indians ta...

Re: Thanet Congress

The Southern Counties Chess Union has awarded the 2023 Thanet Congress the Union’s individual championship for the 2023/24 season. The highest placed eligible player in the Open Section lifts the Glenroy Cup and with it the offer of the Union’s nomination for the 2024 British Championship. Come and ...
