Re: Director of Finance
If you want to pay a modest salary, you'll get a mediocre person. You can't incentivise them with a finder's fee because the goal alignment is all wrong - you need someone who will commit their skill in the knowledge that if they don't deliver, they will get kicked out and that will be a black mark ...

Re: Director of Finance
Not sure I agree. Of course the ECF doesn't have to make a profit, but it does need to maximise the excess of revenue over costs, just as a private company does. For the ECF, that excess is what it has available to do the things it wants to do. For a private company, the excess is what it distribute...

Re: Director of Finance
Chris I agree. I am completely out of touch. Which means I can have completely independent, unbiased views. If your initiatives result in something, I will be pleased. I haven't read anywhere that the ECF is contemplating paying for expert advice to raise funds, but if I am wrong, I will be even mor...

Re: Director of Finance
Jack, if you stand and are elected, if I read rightly on another thread, I would be happy to help. But not under the current regime.

Re: Director of Finance
Glad this is being discussed. A few points re what has gone before, and a few other things to think about... Clearly the ECF isn't bankrupt. Forget legacies, forget the BCM. It will always be able to raise enough Game Fee to cover its costs, providing there is a competent CFO, because people will pa...

Re: Director of Finance
Of course it's OK to spend 80% of your income on admin, as long as your income is high enough. I invest in a business which needs £96 of cost to generate £100 of income, but since its income is £500m I'm happy. And none of the £96 is materials, it's essentially a business where all the cost is p...

Re: Director of Finance
I agree with Paul and Stewart on this. When I was a BCF director, about 100 years ago, I visited the office a number of times and found the then staff (including Cynthia) to be helpful and efficient. If the office costs only £120k a year, that sounds cheap to me. I don't know the numbers but it soun...

Re: Two enquiries
Sorry. I forgot that everyone is 190 these days. Hugh was of course a real 190 plus player, no mean achievement in the 70s.

Re: at the mercy of the arbiter
Sorry Nigel (D) but I don't agree. Nigel (S) may have made has fair share of what people may perceive as mistakes, but, with one exception to my mind, he has thought out his actions carefully, and acted accordingly. I think the UK chess scene would be the poorer without him, whether you agree with w...

Re: Two enquiries
Hi James
I'm sure Richard is correct on Dharshan. He normally is.
I would imagine your Murphy is Hugh Murphy, who if I recall came from Herts. He was a useful player, probably about 190 and he would be about 47 now I guess.
Hope that's useful

Hi John
I've joined your Facebook group. Doubt I have much to contribute apart from memories and a few games, but I will keep a look out - I occasionally find gems at my mother's house from the good old days...

Re: London Central YMCA (aka CentYMCA) Chess Club
I was a member of CentYMCA from about 1971 until 1983 or so. The club was mastermined by Mike Wills and met in extraordinary premises in Endell Street, Covent Garden. A chess room was open every day and it attracted the sort of colourful characters seldom seen these days. If I recall, Leonard Barden...

Re: Martin Blaine
Martin was captain of Hampstead when I started playing for them, in about 1984, and would often rustle up a pretty decent team, with Speelman and even Penrose, unless my memory is playing tricks. He was a charming man, still a good player and always willing to step in to avoid defaults - I think I m...
