Re: Think not what the ECF can do for you, but what you can do for the ECF
On the appearance fees breakdown, I wasn't aware that Malcolm Pein had said: The effect of the resolution, if passed, would probably lead to England fielding an open team of 1 grandmaster and four young amateur international masters. I am not sure if I mentioned it when it was first brought up, but...

Nimzowitsch getting a right pasting from Aronian and Vallejo Pons. By coincidence, either the same day as these comments, or the day before, i followed a link on another site that took me to Spraggett's old website to look at book reviews and the page i started on was an explanation by him as to wh...

Re: US Championship 2019
So loses and ends his unbeaten streak at 45 one short of Fisher's record Nakamura wins a 5th championship Amazing performance from Yu; gain of 96 rating points according to Chess Mind ; as she's already a WGM, I assume IM is the next target I think i read that she has the norms already so is presum...

Re: Piece values
I was listening to the perpetual podcast with Matthew Sadler and Natasha Regan as guests which included a discussion about Alpha Zero. It was interesting to hear that AZ wasnt programmed with a numerical value for the pieces, raising the question as to whether or how that affected the way it played ...

Re: Media comments on chess
Just saw on Twitter that Alexander Arnold Trent, a young promising right back for Liverpool is a keen chess player and the Daily Mail have interviewed him. He's due to play Magnus Carlsen next week and is being mentored by Shreyas Royal and Kyan Bui! https://twitter.com/TarjeiJS/status/1048203873603...

I would also imagine that there is a difference in the space taken up by competitors, and the audience - who when attending the darts are likely to be spending big on beer and sundries...not quite the same at the chess i would have thought which prefers a quieter spectator.

Sounds complicated.Steven DuCharme wrote: ↑Sat May 26, 2018 11:24 pmUPDATE TIME! Forget my previous post. After your first year in BCF your subsequent yearly cost would be reduced by a percentage equal to FIDE rating/100 rounded up or down to a whole number. Cost reduction could also include games played or be based on games played alone.

Re: ULU Chess Club late 1980's
I was there mid 90's and helped run the club. I dont recall anyone named Mike being involved then (or just before i arrived). While i was there i did notice some old match scores in the club's locker that might have helped you identify the name you are looking for, although as that was 20 years ago,...

Re: "The Art of the Tarrasch Defence" by Alexey Bezgodov
'That, of course, is only an opinion, as Bezgodov readily admits, and you can agree or disagree with it all you want.' How on earth can anyone justify purchasing a book when its author says things like that? I'm unclear from the review whether the latter part was a comment from the author, or simpl...

Re: Refunding Entry Fees to Withdrawn Players
There was a related incident in the 1991 Masters Final. Mike Hallett was 7-0 and 8-2 up against Stephen Hendry, and needed pink and black to win 9-2. He missed the pink, and from there contrived to lose 9-8. Hallett's mood presumably didn't improve when he returned home to find his home had been bu...

Excellent. I enjoy good reviews and am sad to see the number of online sites that have them decreasing. Is this a new title?
