Re: Player disqualified from German Championships

Well his reaction is (1) to being accused of cheating and (2) to someone asking to look at his mobile which he could well have put his entire life on. I can imagine quite a lot of people getting rather angry in those circumstances :) Maybe rather less so after this incident has publicised the rule. ...

Re: Player disqualified from German Championships

For GM level players, I doubt the credibility of the notion that you can detect computer use by checking whether computer engines come up with the same moves. Which is good because I think so too :) This is very different because you've got a hypothesis that a player is periodically (2/3 times a ga...

Re: Player disqualified from German Championships

Of course they can at times. So you gather the data over multiple games and check to see if there's a non trivial jump in performance in normal play as compared to after the times they've left the hall and come back. If there isn't then any cheating obviously isn't doing anything important anyway :)...

Re: Player disqualified from German Championships

The point is that you track it over time. You've got a few moves each game where someone may or may not have consulted with a computer and a lot of moves where they obviously haven't. Accumulate information over the course of several games and it'll become really obvious if they are in fact doing so...

Re: Player disqualified from German Championships

I'm not at all sure that Bindrich was handled remotely sensibly actually. What they actually did seems to more represent the sort of paranoia that Bridge has sometimes fallen into. (Cheating in bridge is so easy you sometimes have to bend over backwards not to do so accidentally and prescreens there...

Re: GM Conquest for President?

Yes but with bridge its not an ageing demographic per se, its something that plausibly large numbers of entirely 'normal' people take up *on retirement*. Obviously very unclear whether that will still hold true in 20 to 30 years.

Re: GM Conquest for President?

Yes it's definetly the retired folk who make the difference at a local level. Also its quite important that a lot of those people really aren't in it for the game at all so much as for the social aspects and the like. The more 'serious' portion of the bridge playing population has I think plausibly ...

Re: GM Conquest for President?

The difference in income at the local level really is astonishing - 150 tables/week at Richmond makes them a biggish bridge club but not I'd think outlandish, and that's 600 people each paying 4 pounds *every week*. Or even at the weekend level - the Yorkshire chess league has 3 divisions and 30 tea...

20 Bxd4 and 21 Rxd6 certainly seem like 'interesting' moves to have been considering ;) I presume you must mean something else?

Re: GM Conquest for President?

With bridge they give away masterpoints which form a sort of - broadly useless objectively as they acrue over your lifetime - grade replacement. Quite a few people do however seem to genuinely value them so that's a lot of the motivation. This is especially true as there are different colours, many ...

Re: Disabled access to chess club venues?

I think the key with good venues is being able to pay for one :) Congresses can and certainly should yes. Small evening league clubs etc simply can't and often end up in venues which are profoundly non optimal in all sorts of ways! That often includes a regrettable lack of disabled access, but that'...

Re: Disabled access to chess club venues?

Well yes in principle, but this is also simply rather hard for many clubs. Given the small amounts of money involved in evening league chess its often rather hard finding any kind of stable venue at all, let alone specifiying such (relative!) luxuries as disabled access. Certainly a rather large pro...

Bradford's numbers held up fine too, so I'd guess this one was down to some local things.

Re: Bradford Congress

Finance was iirc the main worry that various people had last summer - with the combination of the changes to fees and the previous levels of membership in Yorkshire there was some very real potential for problems with the early season congresses like Bradford. It's early enough in the season that ma...

Re: Skill v Nerve

Its not luck when someone keeps doing it :) The ability to keep your nerves and continue to play sensible moves under non trivial time pressure isn't common but does makes the 'lottery' awfully biased in one direction. 10 pts seems a fairly fair bet to me too in terms of the practical benefits grade...
