Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Ok until about 3 years ago the flu vaccine for the 50 to 64 year olds with chronic conditions was the same as for the 65+ but now it's a different vaccine Not sure which one will be given to those of us 50+ but I am told GPs have been trying to source more vaccines for a while If you had to vaccina...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I read the uptake for childhood vaccinations in the UK has declined for the 5th year in a row. Parental reasons given include a fear of needles, a low tolerance for the perceived impingement of freedoms or belief in conspiracy theories. I suspect it will be more carrot than stick with a Covid vacci...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

If we are not still a free country, then those who do not consent to vaccination can be placed under house arrest, using the powers in the Coronavirus Act 2020. Can you give a reliable source for the suggestion that refusal to be vaccinated would lead to mandatory house arrest. I can't really imagi...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Quite who we decide to vaccinate Excuse me? Which section(s) of the population to get the biggest net benefits. Not easy decisions given how the virus behaves. For instance, the vaccine won't be absolutely side effect free, so in an ideal world you probably wouldn't want to do the children. If it w...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

A little note of caution in a BBC article, pointing out that realistically a vaccine will take up to 12 months to roll out. So if the roll out starts in March 2021, it might still be rolling come March 2022, Mass production and administration of say the Oxford vaccine might needs something like 30,...

Re: Perhaps you aren't a number and are a free man but OTB so many revert to the former inadvertently.

So if you have a clubmate who's graded 150, improving your own grade from 140 to 160 will add, on average, 24 percentage points to your score. Improving from 160 to 180 will only add another 4 percentage points. I'm sure there is some truth in that, but the point is that you won't have to keep play...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

To those following the European OtB scene, any suggestions for a tournament end October in a country without quarantine in both directions? If the UK keeps going on anything like current trend, then I'd be really quite surprised if we could go anywhere without being quarantined on arrival by late O...

Re: Some Q's concerning the French Defence.

I've definitely felt pretty well obliged to at least have looked at/studied something half workable after 7 Qg4 o-o. Castling in that position just looks a suicide attempt, but I'm aware that engines have tried to make it work. There's something similar that's developed in the Bg5 Najdorf, where it...

Re: Some Q's concerning the French Defence.

I would expect people who play the Winawer to be well booked up. Especially if they're planning to allow those Qg4 x g7 lines. Those lines are scary! It varies, I think, and down at club level its often less than you'd think. I've definitely felt pretty well obliged to at least have looked at/studi...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I believe there is risk of transmission through common surfaces which is why charity shops have decided to 'effectively quarantine some donated items, before putting on the shelves. How much risk may well depend on which expert you speak to. That's what all the emphasis on hand washing is about - i...

Re: ECF Online County Championship

Well said Jon, and well done too; personally I found it a better experience than trekking round the Midlands to venues, so for Devon it must have been a big bonus I think if and when OTB county chess returns, we will see if there's appetite to continue with the online version Its interesting, I thi...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

The vaccines won't offer anything like 100% immunity anyway. They don't need to. Just knock it down by a big enough percentage that it can't reach uncontrolled spread.

Then it can go and join measles and all the other fairly horrible diseases that we've got controlled.

Re: ECF Online County Championship

Definitely well done to them :) Seemed very motivated all through. They don't seem to have won the main ECF one, I can't get at the NCCU records to see if they've even won that. Huge geographical dispersion of course, and (historically anyway) far fewer people than the big 2. No idea when they last ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I would be very surprised if that does ultimately go ahead. Late September is definitely an a priori more promising time than those late October dates. It's the start of half-term, but I assume you're thinking of something else Martin? Maybe the fabled "second wave" might be in full force by then? ...
